  • NEVER LOCK YOU KEYS IN BIRD'S TRUNK

NIGHTMARE! Leaving another beautiful week at Deep Creek Lake. Pack up the Bird including bag with spare key. Drop primary key in trunk, close it, everything locked. LOOOOOOOng story short. AAA arrive an hour later. Got inside car door within 15 minutes but after two hours could not pick trunk lock despite his having a full set of Ford master keys. (Electronic button disables when alarm is enabled). Had to call a lock smith who took 4 more hours. He tried to make a new key. Did not work. He tried applying power directly to electronic button after removing door panel, did not work. Talk of prying open the trunk!?!?! Finally he managed to remove entire lock behind seat and break it down to open trunk. 6 hours in total. Argggghhh!! On slightly positive note, the lock smith charged me only 50 bucks and apologized for that! Also AAA guy stayed the entire time to help.

Lesson, be very careful about keys in the trunk.

Good to know, Jim...thanks for the info. That's always been a big fear of mine...locking the keys in the trunk! ARRRGGGGHHHHH (yours had a 'happy' ending).

that is a nightmare. another thought only too late for you to have tried - your ford dealer may have had the code to make a new key for your car that would at least have got you in the door and possibly open the trunk lock with it.

When we travel I always take the spare key with me in my purse. If Charlie locks the keys in the car, we can get in. I know it is hard for men to tote the spare with them.

I've done it......at a cruise night. I didn't want to call AAA until after the show because I didn't want a tow truck driving on the field.

In the interim, several members tried their keys.....2 out of 6 or 7 keys fit my door, and we were able to release the trunk from behind the drivers seat. Their keys would not start the car though. Something to keep in mind if you do it at an event.

Re: NEVER LOCK YOU KEYS IN BIRD'S TRUNK

After owning so many Fords with door lock key pads, I could not resist adding the Ford after market paste-on key pad to my T-Bird. I agree it does not look good but it is extremely functional. Got a deal at 2/$100. Courtney's is still in the carton because she refuses to "ruin" the appearance of her T-Bird by adding the key pad.

Lou, some have put the key pad on the windshield trim below the glass.

I know it's so easy to say now..... that when we take the Bird out of the city, my wife carries the extra set - key fob and keys, wherever we go.... but I am sure you have all the advice you need.... so sorry you had to go through all that heart-ache.

You don't want your keyring remote battery to die without the spare rempte close by either. Since the anti-theft takes over the ignition, the car won't start until the other remote is used to tell the alarm everything is "OK."

I have been thinking about the key pad.Anyone have photos , my Lincoln and Sabel had them (factory) and I felt it was a great item. With two cars I don't carry both sets and always need to get into the other car.

Here's a tip. I ALWAYS look at my keys in my hand whenever I close the trunk, works without fail. That is, unless someone else closes the trunk for me. But if my keys aren't in my hand, they're in my pocket, so no problem.
