    Re: SHIFTING?

Never shifted my '03 for the first three years I owned her. Finally tried it one day and it seemed to work fine. Shortly thereafter, I got the dreaded "E" on the dash where the P, R, or whatever should be displayed. Had an extended warranty and they replaced the valve throttle body that others have had done at what would have been a cost of around $800 without the warranty. Works fine now, though not as much pep as previously following the computerized tranny update. I asked if they could do that again since the repair must have cancelled out the first one. Not under warranty, they said.
Needless to say, I've not used the select shift again!

      Re: SHIFTING?

I use it quite a bit. Like it on windy roads and I use it in traffic to keep my foot off the brake. You don't need to watch the tach much. If you listen to the engine you can tell if you should shift. It adds to that one with the machine feeling.

Oh... poo. One innocent, 100% unintentional, completely accidental, little slip of the typing fingers and someone's gotta toot their horn about it. But... as long as we're talking about it, I did also happen, by pure chance, to stumble across this smiley.

I thought it was a gas.

(Please accept my apology in advance. I'm not allowed to use "potty humor" at home around my daughter... and sometimes it just builds up until... well, you know.)

Sorry... didn't mean to shift away from the topic.

Actually, I'm not a very good "Standard Shift" driver and haven't driven a manual shift in at least 15 years...so I've not attempted it. I'd hate to ruin the bronze beauty with my lack of driving skills! :(

what's the difference between our select shifts and the race cars and other sports cars that use the pedal shifter on the wheel?

Well, for one thing, I can tell you that with BMW's, the shift is instantaneous...more in the line of F1 fomula racing...something like 1/200th of a second. The Tbird's...not so much.
