    Re: Covered Bridges

I think there were between 6 to 8 Birds that drover over it that day on our way to Heartland Thunder. When we got on the other side a guard told us that you can only drive on it for special occasions. We told him that this WAS a SPECIAL OCCASION. We then got out of the area!

He also said there was a Vet club going over it the same week.
They are Here. Scotty, beam me up!

        Re: Covered Bridges

I always thought that bridges were covered in the old days because bridges get icy in winter and the cover would prevent that.
Anybody know if this might be the reason? There must be some reason.

There is a covered bridge in Stone Mountain Park near Atlanta, GA. I have a pic somewhere of my '92 Firebird going across it. I found it in this listing for bridges in Georgia:

When I was little, my grandparents said the bridges were covered to provide shelter in storms for the horse and buggy. My mom told stories of seeking shelter in a covered bridge in rainstorms as she was walking to school.

There is a covered bridge in Frankenmuth, Michigan we go across all the time. Goes from Hotel to chicken eating place over Cass river.

I never knew that Mississippi had a covered bridge until I did a search.

Here is a web site that has different states with info about cover bridges in that state:

Kokomo, I've taken my bird across the Stone Mtn bridge several times & I'll bet Bronzebird Rick) has too. I have some photos of that somewhere...I'll have to dig them up. I've also been on the Rockdale Co. bridge Rick mentioned. There are 7-8 within a few hours of Loganville & I keep thinking it would make for a fun day to see if I could find all of them one afternoon....

                    Mike:

Make sure that you visit the covered bridge at Watson Mill State Park just east of Athens, GA off of highway 72. That one is a very pretty bridge so if you haven't taken either of your Birds across that one it is a worthwhile trip.

I haven't driven the Bird there as we go to that park with our horses to ride the Equestrian trails there. It is a little scary to be pulling a few thousand pounds of horses and trailer behind the Durango when going over that bridge.

Cool! Another one to add to my day-trip list... Thanks Rick!
Hmmmm....might make for a fun day trip for metro Atlanta birds. Anyone interested in making a day of it some Saturday in May or June???

One of the activities during the International Thunderbird Club annual convention in 2004 was a covered bridge tour in the Lancaster PA area. Great fun, and very picturesque.

Here are some photos of T-Birds on the Cedar Bridge in Madison County, Iowa. I took the photos on July 6, 2007, to show you that you could drive on this bridge, but I never expected a head-on collision with 2 T-Birds! Ooops!

However, most roads leading up to the Covered Bridges in Madison County are gravel. This makes for very dusty T-Birds!

We had a GREAT TIME with ChrisCrete (Dennis and Judy) that day!
