Re: Hard Top on Hard Top Off

For me it isn't nearly so much a "top on" vs "top off" as that seems about the same either way.......... on the other hand.......as it relates to the color thing?

The T-Bird Blue '02 gets far more commentary that the Merlot '04, top on or top off.

If I had to guess why........ I'd have to say it's just the pretty retro thing vs the more conservative look of the Sand and Merlot combo.

I get way more compliments with the hard top on. I think it's the contrasting colors. Leroy

I personally prefer the contrasting color tops. Yours is very elegant, Leroy.

Both but we prefer hardtop off and it's too hard to change often.
The top was on when we took delivery and drove home with it and was immediately removed.
Luckily we have a 3 car garage so storage is not an issue.

Same for me except for the wife part.

I keep tellin' y'all - - - look at your vehicle registration papers. I'm pretty sure they all say "Convertible". T'aint no asterisks on there that says: "'cept when it's, cold, rainy, months with snow, or out fishin' for complements". Oh, and I voted for top down - woulda voted for Merlot and Light Sand, too, if it was a choice.

                ALL TBN'rs
We have 2 retro birds and 3 hardtops. None of the hardtops have been on the cars in over a year. In my opinion we get more looks with the top off on both vehicles, but I think they look sharp with the factory top portholes & all.
For the Red we have red and white and the cashmire it is cashmire.
The birds just look great any way you see them. We get thumbs up all the time here in Austin.
PS our daughter (43) has a 2004 Blue & sand. She always puts the top down to & from work. Loves the car and has her hardtop hanging from garage roof.
                Lives in Cypress, Texas

I get more looks with the top on. I'm sure it's because you just don't see two-tone cars anymore especially with portholes. But to non car people with the top down it's just another rag-top.

I think the car looks best w/the top off or down. The teardrop angle towards the rear is even more noticable and elegant w/the top down IMO

As for a different color top, I think it gives the car an even greater retro look. I'm finally having my white top painted factory black (after 8-years of white) as I think it would look even better.

Me too........' cause that one is mine.

Still, can't lie. The T-Bird Blue just inspires more comments on the rare occasions when I drive it.

It's all subjective, of course, but for those who have this color combination this may well be the prettiest and most suited to the car's over-all appearance. Although I consider the "mint green" as probably the most Retro, at least to my eye.

I'm not sure what the color has to do with the hardtop vs convertible subject of this thread, but since it has been introduced, we all know that the most famous and most iconic of all Thunderbirds is the WHITE Thunderbird (with hardtop on) driven by the mysterious blond in "American Graffiti".

Like most, I think the car is more fun to drive with the top down, but it sure looks classier and rides better with the hardtop on. There's something very special about those portholes. Every time the hardtop goes on or comes off, it's like getting a new car. Either way, it's one beautiful, unique, and fun automobile.

I get the most comments with the hard tonneau cover I got from Gary Kimmel. Not so much with the top down, the boot or hardtop on. BTW, the hard top went on this morning. Took her for a good wash afterwards.

Nancy likes the hard top on, I like the top down and we absolutely get more compliments or questions with the hard top on. Everyone loves the portholes!!! Lots of looks, stares, thumbs up always!

I love my bird with the hardtop off, so I can get the wind when I want it. My wife, though, is looking forwrd to colder weather so I"ll put the hardtop on, as she loves the retro look!
