For non-native speakers - what is the term "Shade Tree" used for?
DIY persons?
Joerg
Back in the day when guys worked on their cars under a tree in the back yard they were referred to as "Shade tree mechanics". The term is still used today for guys who do their on mechanical work.

boy, Julie...can't say as I disagree with you one bit...have yet to find a dealer here in Phoenix whom I'd completely trust with my Tbird (have taken to both Ford AND Lincoln dealers and have found both types are lacking...IMO, it's poor management, pure & simple).
I use my local guy. Grand River Automotive, He was a Ford dealer mechanic who is now on his own. The local ford dealer is gone for some time now, but he is a Ford Guy like me so I use him for all the work on the TBird and he is a honest man that I like to deal with.
As long as it's under warranty I'll take it to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. When I can't renew the warranty, it's time for a new ride, I wouldn't own one of these cars without a Ford ESP Premium warranty.
Of my 3 cars, one owned 30 years, one 12 years, & the T-bird 1 year, there has been one trip to a mechanic other than myself, except for tire installation. That's because of a CV joint in the 2000 Voyager, broke at the grocery store & had to be towed.
Lets face it, if a man (or woman) was smart enough to work on a car properly, he'd be busy as a surgeon or engineer or such, & definitely not working as a mechanic.
