    Re: Ethanol Free Gas

We also have a Honda Accord with a trip computer. Before the ethanol gas came out we routinely got 28+ MPG with it around town. We now get 23+ MPG with no change in driving habits. The car has less than 50,000 miles on it so it is not due to being worn out. Ethanol is another political boondoggle that could not survive in the marketplace without massive government subsidies. It only benefits the corn growers and the politicians who sell their votes to them. There is no environmental improvement because it takes more energy to make it than it supplies. (In my humble opinion of course)

You forgot to mention big oil, they benifit as well. I've always said the reason we see E10, (and now the push for E20) is that the economy drops enough that you still buy the same amount of gasoline so it doesn't hurt the oil companies. E85 would hurt the oil companies, and despite the large number of new vehicles that can burn it, there is no push to make E85 redily available.

Big oil also employs hundreds of thousands of people, pays an enormous amount of taxes, and supplies us with possibly the most important commodity for keeping our country running. E85 would give us even lower gas mileage, damage some cars, give more government subsidies, and buy more politicians. Not much of a bargain.

E10 ups the octane rating by reducing the energy in the fuel.

P.S. High octane does not always give you more power. Only higher comression will take advantage of higher octane.

                  Re: Ethanol Free Gas

Last year I went on a 3300 mile trip to California and back and got 18.00 miles to the gallon driving my pickup. This year I drove 3200 miles and only got 16.4 MPG. There were more gas stations serving Ehanol this time and that had something to do with it. I always run the air conditioner, that did not change. I had some rain in Navada and that does lower mileage also.
