Re: How many COPs have you replaced to your Tbird car up to now?

One on my '04........... it's Ford's problem so I let them "deal".

On the '02 it's my problem. Just last year.......started the car up after a winter's
"nap"..........idled a little rough and a quick ride confirmed what I already knew. No codes....... and with 60,000 miles on the clock I just did the "hit and miss" diagnosis. Tried swapping out the four on the "easy" side first........ quick ride......still missing. Swapped out the other side, quick ride problem resolved.

Next day.........ordered up 8 more Ford coils for the shelf again and with any luck they'll sit there for at least the same 4 years that last set sat there.

With REAL LUCK I'll throw 'em in the glove box for the next owner of the last car to "go" when the time comes.

BTW-this is a repair all owners need to get familiar with. It's EASY, less hassle than an oil change really. You don't have to crawl around under the car and you don't have to get dirty doing it.

Diagnosis is really the toughest part. The surprising part to me was how poorly the car will have to run before throwing a code. Neither of my cars threw a code yet you could feel the intermittent miss under acceleration very clearly both times.

I asked the mechanic who found the one bad coil on the '04 how he did it without a code and he explained that he uses an oscilloscope to nail it down. That's nice but not practical for those of us working at home.

As stated in another thread, I replaced the remaining 6 last week...only to find out that one of the dealers who replaced one of the remaining 2 didn't also replace the plug. GRRR...anyway, it cost us $942 (Ford won't pay for it until it codes). We did it because I got tired of going in every few months when one malfunctioned & coded, having to leave the car and struggle through with the rental, blah, blah, blah.

Ford dealers replaced 5 of ours on the 02 over time, between 2004 and 2007. When extended warranty ended and the next ones went out, replaced two more on our own, only to have others go out again a year later. so replaced all 8 with Ford coils and the plugs as well. that totals 15 coils replaced. Been good since. Have 25,000 miles on it since. Don't expect any problems with those for awhile.

Re: How many COPs have you replaced to your Tbird car up to now?

On my original car, 2002 TBB I replaced all 8 cops myself since there was no warranty.

After about 40,000 miles, my 2005 started having symptoms of COPS failing. The dealership has changed 4 of the 8 COPS at no charge to me. The first time, one of the newly changed cops failed after about 10 miles, and they changed it again. A few months later, two more cops were failing on the other side. This time, #7 had triggered the code light, but I told them that #7 and #8 were misfiring and they replaced them both.

I have a scantool that will read the codes AND it will also report misfires even before there are enough of them to trigger the codes.

                $962?

Good grief.......where did you source the coils? That's well in excess of $100 per coil!!!

                www.rockauto.com

Much better!! Approximately $45 each Ford OEM coil.

I think that was P&l at the dealer, not just price of the coils.

Re: How many COPs have you replaced to your Tbird car up to now?

Periodic stumbling the other day (at traffic light and on acceleration, sometimes ran perfect). Took it to my mechanic. No check engine light, but threw code for cylinder 6 missfire. Relaced with new cop and plug and said there was a bit of oil in bottom of cylinder.
Drove it home (20 min. Hwy and suburb) and noticed stumbling again about 5 min. from home.
Took it in the next day and he found oil in bottom of 1-4 (all). Guess I'm in for the big expense. He dried oil up and reassembled.
Apparently the engine heat dries up the seals and they become brittle and allow oil to penetrate.
Will be doing both sides soon (the other 7), plus seals/gasket etc.

COP from Ford $100.00 +, so am going independant source, probably Borg Warner as have been reading up on them.

2002 with 97,000 km (60,000 miles)..... 1st coil issue. Driven daily.

THE FORD DEALER IN KERRVILLE, TX CHARGED $238 TO INSTALL ONE COIL AND PLUG. I HAD THE OTHER SEVEN CHANGED HERE IN TENNESSEE BY THE FORD DEALER FOR $631 THAT WAS WITH ALL THE GASKETS AND ETC. TEXAS IS FARTHER AWAY FROM THE PARTS.

The COPS curse hit me yesterday at 31,400 miles. Took the car in today and they are going to replace all eight at no charge. The check engine light started blinking so I took it out on a country road and really got on it until the check engine light stayed on. Never did run bad, but the code was for bad COPS.

WOW! I could only get them to replace the failed one, #6. Failed last Friday at 56K. Never had the check engine light come on just had a idle with a little rough spot every so often. Enough to feel it while sitting in the seat and see it on the tach.

Re: How many COPs have you replaced to your Tbird car up to now?

Yesterday when I left the coffee shop the car went into limp mode and the wrench light came on. I drove the two miles home and shut the car off. I immediately restarted the car and light was off and the car running normal. The car ran fine the rest of the day.

Today at 7 AM headed to the coffee shop and now check engine and wrench light came on and limp mode started. I drove directly to Nick Mayer Lincoln and pulled in to the service bay to show them the lights before shutting it off. I explained the COP problem and she politely interrupted me to say they were well aware of the 3 COP problems, the coils, the oil leaks, and the water leaks. She said it would be $110.00 diagnostics charge if not a covered problem but they would check all areas and advise, said I could enjoy free coffee & cookies while I waited for it. I explained about the original factory warranty being canceled by Ford when it was new and asked if this would still be covered and she said yes that the emissions warranty was never canceled just the 3/36. She said they can replace up to two COP's with out authorization but more need ok from Ford.

By 8:30 I was at the coffee shop sipping my coffee and smiling. Bad Cop #5 & #7 with no signs of water or oil leaks and no charge for work done!
