It is at least partly a matter of elevation. At sea level you can probably always get away with regular. At 5000 and above, probably not. A good repair shop can listen for knock you might not hear and let you know how your engine is doing on regular. There is usually some performance difference with the fuel choice but not always due to the tolerances your car has.
