It is at least partly a matter of elevation. At sea level you can probably always get away with regular. At 5000 and above, probably not. A good repair shop can listen for knock you might not hear and let you know how your engine is doing on regular. There is usually some performance difference with the fuel choice but not always due to the tolerances your car has.

When I purchased my 05 in 2010 the dealer i bought ot from did me a "favor" and filled the tank with regular. It knocked like crazy. With 91 octane which is all I can get when I'm in upper Michigan in the summer, I get a slight knock under certain conditions.

Premium only since it's only filled up 2-3 times a year.

Where in Upper Northern Michigan?

We spend summers in Harbor Springs across the bay from Petoskey.

I always use premium.

We use top-tier premium all the time. But why would you post a poll and not allow the results to be viewed?

In regard to not posting the results, that is more due to inexperience in posting a poll as this is the first one I have ever done. If it can be changed, I'll gladly do it and thanks to all of you that did respond.

Like someone else in a previous post said, the dealer I bought the car from put regular gas in it when I bought it and it pinged like hell! I'll only use Premium.

Jim, depends on how you drive your car I guess. I tried reg. one time and it pinged every time I entered an interstate. Only did that once. Nothing but high test now. It's now been over 10 years of driving.

I only use high test, it just runs better for me.

Premium for my daily drive (~6000 miles per year) and I live at sea level. I am not taking any chances as I want my dream car to last as long as possible.

I have only used premium in mine. I was concerned with the possibility of a detonation problem if I used regular.
