Re: New Pikes Peak Hill Climb Thread

The first time I drove to the top of Pike Peak was in a new Fairmont 4-cyl with Automatic. At the half point while going up, I noticed they were checking the front brakes on the cars as the came back down. As I neared the peak, the higher altitude caused oil leakage at the camshaft seal and likewise from the rear trans. seal. (These leaks all quit and never reoccured as I descended). However, as I made the trip downward, I slowed only by downshifting and then as they were stopping us for the brake inspection I used the park brake. The attendent reached down behind the front wheel and then went in to get an assistant. They both were inspecting the the left front wheel, so I asked if something was wrong. They said, "your brakes are ice cold."

A less strenous, but even higher climb, is Mt. Evans which is paved all the way to the top.

Charlie do not listen to Spence, you do not have to peddle up the mountain'
However dragging your heals back down the mountain is a must to help the brakes on the train. Just wear goooooood strong rubber sole spiked shoesBunny Lou
