    No problems, but it's pampered.

      Re: Windshield Trim Problems

My car was a daily driver parked in an open air lot at work for 8 years, so it's not surprising to me that the trim is bubbling now. But just the center strip. The car spends it's days now inside a garage. There's no heat or A/C, but at least it's out of the strong FL sun.

I just noticed slight flaking of the chrome on the upper inside edge of the center section of my 2004.

I have had a piece of the chrome plating about the size of a dime break away from the edge of the center trim. This is right along the edge where it touches the driver's side piece. I've had this for about 3 years, the flaking hasn't spread but it certainly looks bad. I'm probably the only one that sees it all the time. I imagine it would have to be pointed out to a non Bird owner. Non the less its there, its ugly, it is too bad. I ought to change the piece out unless there is someway to repair something like that.

                Re: Windshield Trim Problems

I think everyone will agree that the pitting, or as some say bubbling, and flaking is caused from driving and leaving the car out in the weather. Nothing new there, it's always been that way.

An alternative might be to paint those pieces to match the body.

I have to disagree with the idea that this bubbling or pitting or whatever that causes the chrome plating to lift is weather related. My 05 is in the garage all the time it is not out on the road. My center piece on the windshield trim began to lift along the edge where it meets with the driverside piece shortly after the car came off its 3yr warranty. In my opinion the problem is due to a poor quality of chrome plating or possibly the base wasn't properly treated before the plating process.

I agree, your car might be an isolated case were that happened. Also I've seen customized retro birds with the trim painted the same color as the car and it looks pretty nice. And as time goes by maybe that will be the thing to do if new pieces are not available, and re-chroming is out of the question because of costs. Same with the famous chrome hood scoop trim, I've heard that some of those are starting to pit and flake also.

Depends on what you mean by out of the question. I was quoted $700 to do all three pieces, which is out of the question today, since the parts are still available. But in the future? I guess it depends on your level of love of chrome and Thunderbirds.

I agree with you Mike, four of my low mileage, always garaged cars have had the chrome bubble up. The 007 has 127,000 miles and shows no concerns. The Inca Gold has 60,000 had some of both, no garage and garage, but no concerns. On personal experience, I will say it happens more on the center piece than on the side pieces.

                            Re: Windshield Trim Problems

I replaced the right side piece. The problem was just at the end of the piece near the center one. Because there is no seal between these two pieces, it might be due to water infiltration during car wash and others.

OK, It's not the weather or temperature changes that cause it, it's been made wrong. So you replace it with new or have it painted or re-chromed. Bottom line is it's all plastic junk that's way over priced. Example, chrome hood scoop trim for about $80.00 compared to the chrome grille, maybe ten times bigger, for $190.00.
