  • Has your fuel pump failed

There seems to be a good many reports of fuel pump failure on retro birds.
I thought it would be helpful to know how many owners have had to replace their pump and at what mileage. Also if you have had no fuel pump issues and your mileage.. Thanks

Re: Has your fuel pump failed

At approximately 51000 miles. There was a low hum when vehicle was started behind the drivers side. It stopped after a couple of minutes. Didn't know it was the fuel pump. The vehicle was at a shop for a week getting a new rag top. When I picked it up the hum started, as usual, but became extremely loud and wouldn't stop. Was able to make it to the dealer. At that time I had no idea how the fuel system operated, on the Bird. Expensive lesson.

That brings to mind if there is ever an inexpensive repair on retros??????????

Seems to me like that what has been posted that a common starting point is a grand..

The '03 Evening Black has about 59K and the '04 Mint Bird has about 42K and no fuel pump issues yet on either car. Now that this is in print, I will be jinxed.

Only 13K on our 2004 "Bird" but no issues so far. IMHO they seem to fail more
from sitting in storage/garage and not using them for long periods of time.

Mine went south while the car was sitting in the garage almost exactly 5 years ago (repaired on 1/27/11) when the car had 65,381 miles on it. Also had the upper and lower control arms and toe adjustment rods replaced at the same time due to rubber deterioration. All the work was under the ESP, so I only paid the $100.00 deductible.

Wow, that was almost 60,000 miles ago. Miles sure add up when you are having fun.

so far, it looks like most of the bad pumps reported on this thread have been on 2002s with 1 report on an 05.

Probably should have asked what year your car is - I believe that the fuel pumps in the 2002s were not "engineered" to deal with ethanol where 2003's + were. My 2002 failed, 2003 has been fine. My 2002 had 1,400 miles on it when it failed.
