I try to fill up more often now that gas is so high to avoid the "sticker shock"!!

Also Tom, I just got back from a m/c trip out your way and ran into some $3.50 gas prices on the PCH.

I always top her off at 1/4. It makes little difference as I still average about a tank a week.

          Folks,
Thanks you all for your kind advice. Today I filled her up with $2.39 a gallon Shell 93. Just another example of what puts this site light years ahead of all others.

Re: Fill Up or Wait till E

Have had a strange thing happen the last 2 fillups. First, I ALWAYS remove my keys when filling up - security reason. The last 2 fillups, the guage does NOT return to the full position...slowly, over the following few miles, the guage will creep back up to the full position. Anyone have any thoughts on this? ANOTHER trip to the dealer?

With my classic cars and with boats, I always use as much of the old fuel as possible. This way no "last years fuel" gets mixed with fresh. I use a stablizer in fuel that does not get used in 3 weeks. Tractors, lawn mowers little drive cars and some of the other short used engines run fuel stablizers in all year. It seems that the new oxygenated fuels turn bad in a short time. Some marine applications recommend treating fuel that you cannot use in 3 weeks.

I always fill up if I`m down to 1/4 of a tank or if I see gas at a good price. I our area, northern Ohio, gas prices vary as much as 10 cents a gallon depending on where your at and the day of the week.

Did not vote as choices are too few. Never allow tank to get below half.

Re: Fill Up or Wait till E

Obviously it makes some difference in the number of miles driven. Since we live in Texas, we don't have an issue with 'hibernation', so I can't specifically speak your question from experience.

What I can say is that I usually fill up if the gauge goes to somewhere between 1/2 & 3/4. It's something I've done all my life, not for any specific technical reason, but rather from the standpoint that 1) if for some unforeseen catastrophe I get some 'bad' gas, it may be offset by 3/4 of a tank of 'good' stuff and not cause too much a problem if caught quickly, 2) I don't have an extremely large cost on any one fill-up, and 3) a wide variation in cost per gallon either up or down is less a factor.

As I said, this habit has developed over the last 38-40 years so the dollar factor is not really as big a deal as it once was, but I don't have a motivation to change.

I keep it full. Top it off every day no matter how much is in the tank.
On a road trip, fill before last 1/4.

Re: Fill Up or Wait till E

I fill up when it gets to 1/8th on trips, 1/4 around home. Add fuel injector cleaner every six months or so. Seems to be a winning combination for me. I have never had an injector replaced on a car. But do replace fuel filter at about 75k unless the manual says sooner. Don't know what the interval is for the Bird, I've only got 15k on her.
