    Re: Ah, The Old Days

Ya know Bruce, the thing that bugs me is that we are letting the insurance companies and the government specify how the automakers will build our cars. I was wondering the other day what my Tbird would have cost without the government bumpers, Mrs. Dole's stop light, air bags, compulsory crash testing, smog control...ad infinitum.
Of course, part of this is the fault of the automakers themselves. I can't understand why the headlight dimmer can't work the same way on my 2003 F150 and my 2003 Tbird. My 93 Mark VIII and my 300ZX both work the same. Out of the four cars, there are 3 different ways to turn on the windshield wipers. I have had to turn on the interior lights to figure out how to turn on the wipers, just what you wanted on a dark night when you were already having trouble seeing the road.
There are a few things I like though. I like not having to replace points and plugs and rebuild carburetors. The new engines are starting to get back some of the performance and mileage now. I realize that the automakers probably wouldn't have sprung for electronic fuel injection and igniton systems if it hadn't been for smog control problems. Maybe there is a little good in everything.

      Joe,
      Lets see:
      >Without government regs and insurance companies you would probably own two Birds in stead of one.
      >Every engineer and designer wants to make a better widget. Variety is the spice of life so please read all your owners manuals.
      >Ya, a little grease under the nails never hurt anybody.

Like many of you I have been a "certified Car Nut" for many years. each of us remembers the cars from our youth and those are the ones we like the most. For me it was the cars of the 50's as I was now old enough to drive (1952). It was a great time as the Big War was over, roads were being improved and the auto manufacturers were being guided by stylists not engineers. I recently sold a Mark II Continental, 1956, and still have a 59 Corvette. I won't bore you with all the cars from that period and since that I have owned. Those cars bring back great memories of times past BUT they cannot compare with our cars of today. If you drove 150 miles in a 1957 Tbird or my 1959 Corvette you felt like your back was breaking. And they smelled. If you kept it in an enclosed garage that was attached to your house the fumes from the oil breather tube never went away. I have driven over 800 miles in a day with my current Tbird without any sense of fatigue or pain. The current disc brakes stop our cars better than the old drum brakes ever did and fuel mileage is 3 or 4 times better. Were there some things I liked better. Of course, the vent windows, dimmer switch are two of them. But all in all, other than the styling, which is non-existent today in most models, I prefer the modern cars.

Hey Bob, I totally agree, however, there is nothing like taking out the classic, for a spin in the good 'ol days.

....Tom....needless to say it's been THE topic between my wife and I....Thinking out loud about owning a '55....sometime....then a situation arises......always admired this particular '55.....a driver not a trailer queen....with a couple of things I thought I could overlook....now I'm not so sure.....keep going back to plan A.....my wife would really like to add a Thunderbird Blue '02.....would be easier financially too!

Nice to see you posting again Ray, I thought we had lost you for a while. BTW, welcome back. I hope everything is going well with you and the bird.

One of the old things I miss that was not mentioned was the glovebox door turning into a cup holder. I know todays cars have better cupholders in the console, but the old glove box cup holder brings back my drive-in theatre memories.
