Brian Elliott is the son of our long time friends and traveling buddies, Pat and Connie Elliott (94mcd and Ms94mcd). Brian and his Mom and Dad are in much need of our prayers and support at this time.
In 2009 Brian was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease, and he was placed on the liver transplant list then. Since that time he has had flare ups which placed him in the hospital for about a week, however, he continued to bounce back. At least yearly since, Brian has had a liver tissue biopsy and things were always normal.
Around the middle of March of this year a routine biopsy looked different than it had in the past and after consultation with the Mayo Clinic, it has been determined that Brian has Cholangio Carcinoma (which is bile duct cancer). Mayo Clinic scheduled Brian’s first appointment for Monday, April 30th. Since the Elliott's felt certain their stay in Rochester would be lengthy, they rented a house in Rochester, MN only 5 minutes from the hospital to keep from having to live in a hotel.
Next week Brian will begin chemo and radiation treatments for three weeks. He will be given a portable pump for the chemo and he will have radiation twice a day during those three weeks. If all goes well, then he will take an oral dose daily. Mayo Clinic has again placed Brian on the National Liver Transplant List. The bad news is there are 16,000 people awaiting a liver. Mayo said it could be a year to 18 months before Brian would actually get a liver. Considering Brian’s condition and the length of time, they feel Brian’s best option would be to find a live donor. If he is able to find one, Mayo Clinic said a live donor’s blood type must be Type O, and the live donor can be no older than 55. It may be difficult to find someone who meets this criteria and is willing to help - definitely a big decision for anyone to make.
Please keep Brian in your prayers and pray that someone can be found that meets the requirements for a live donor with the willingness to help.
