  • A dead battery story

I'm using the blue 02 today to do some quilt shop hopping well away from home. It's a sunny day, and I have to get gas before heading out on the road. Getting in the car, I note that the window drop didn't work. No big deal, it's been doing that for a while off and on but thought it was odd since we had the car out last evening for a long dinner run so should have worked as it has done in the past. (this is clue #1 that something is not right).
I proceed to the gas station and fill up. While writing down the mileage, I turn off the auto headlights so I can read the mileage, normal procedure when the sun is out and I forget to turn them back on..
Get out on the road and take off for 1st destination which is 100 miles down the road. speed limit is 75. Get to my destination and note that the window drop still didn't work. (clue #2) Quilt Shop is not open when it should be so I ask the business next door to it if he knew of any problem they were having. He was unaware. So, I decide to get back in my car and route my next destination on the GPS. (window drop still didn't work and I had the door shut). When I'm done with the GPS, get ready to start car. (BIG Clue #3) Car wouldn't start. not even a click. steering wheel barely moved. darn. Only got door to open a crack, not enough to push it open. Windows are all shut, trapped in the softtop. I realize the battery is dead (it was 6 years old). Dilemma. It's getting hot inside the car. No one on the street and I'm starting to sweat. No horn to honk. nothing. After about 10 minutes, I see the shop owner that had the shop next to the QS come out. He waves and I frantically wave back to come over. He's puzzled and comes over and I explain my dilemma thru the glass. He says he'd call a business kitty -corner to where I was. Meanwhile I notice the the Quilt Shop owner has arrived, late to her shop. I try shoving the door one more time. This time I got the window to pop out of the soft top without breaking. whew, relief from the building heat. btw, isn't the soft top supposed to be able to be opened manually? Couldn't get it to budge.

Called spouse and told him about dead battery so get him to get the battery out of the IG (that battery is 12 years old, still running and serviced us well on our trip this month) and drive out to where I'm at.

At least the key worked to get the trunk open. I went to the business kitty-corner across the street which has an auto service to see if they could test the battery. No sense jump starting it if it's bad. They had a portable tester, it showed that the battery is not in good shape. I told him that I'd call the local Ford dealer to see if they had a battery and that I'd handle it from here on out so he left to go back to work, no charge. Called the Ford dealer, they had none in stock (rural town). Suggested that I contact an O'Reilly's store that would have the battery. I decided to just wait for spouse to arrive.

So I spend the next hour at the Quilt Shop, got some fabric I "needed" and cooled off. Spouse arrives, exchanges batteries. What a bear to remove the battery. Spouse ended up having to take the tire out to get the last hold down back on after putting the other battery in.

I think we will be replacing both batteries.

      The saga continues:

Our dealer actually had 3 in stock. George bought 1, brought it home, put it in, dead as a door nail. and he had fully installed it before testing it. Had to take it all out. Took it back to dealer. The other 2?: one was also dead as a door nail and the other only at 8 volts. All 3 were a year or more old. So tomorrow we hope they get in a good one. manager apologized to George for not having a good battery in stock. Said he's understaffed right now and would George like a job in the warehouse? (anyone out there reading this and need a job and have good work ethics plus know their way around auto parts?)

Well, at least when my dealer gets me one the next day, it is fully charged and ready to go.

At least George was only 100 miles away. You might consider AAA.

I know what a pain it is to change a dead battery in the trunk/spare tire compartment. That's why I never complain when Ford charges me $12.50 to remove the old one and install the new one. First one went bad in 2009, 4 years old. Second one lasted 5 1/2 years replaced in 2015. Summer heat in Charleston is all year, except for January, so Batteries don't last long here.

I've replaced the battery in our Bird both times. It is a huge pain, most everything has to come out of the trunk. But if it's only every 9 years [the orig.] and then every six years [the 2nd one replaced this year], I think I can handle it. I might feel differently in 2023 though!

Our car will never ever see the inside of the local Lincoln and Ford dealerships again. But that's a different story for a different day.

I have replaced at least 2 batteries in the T-Bird. We are on our 3 battery now. It is never easy to replace, but I usually try to do it without taking the spare tire out.

Have George check the alternator output voltage at the battery while the AC and headlights are on, with the motor running. Need to make sure the alternator is OK and putting out sufficient voltage to charge the new battery. Our T-Bird is on our third alternator!

I have had the dealer replace mine the two times I replaced it. It was always when I was having "The Works" which is oil change, tire rotation, and checks on brakes, alignment, fluid checks etc. which comes up periodically at a discount (just about on my need timing). If there was an installation charge, it was nominal. While they may not have the battery in stock at the dealer, they get it pretty quickly from their dealer supplier.

Jerry, I suspect your hands are not as big as George's. I will have him check the alternator just to make sure but the battery was 6 years old. Any battery making it past 3 years is on borrowed time. So far, 9, 12 and 6 years are what ours have made it to.

                      Dot,
I think I read it right. You say the doors did not unlock because of a dead battery? You were trapped in a hot car.
Bad design, relying on battery power to escape. Even worse if this happened in Houston recently. There needs to be a mechanical way to unlock the drivers door from the inside.

What happened is not normal. Even though the glass had no power to drop, it's supposed to allow opening the door with only minimal pressure. I'm thinking that the automatic drop feature wasn't properly set. If you use the hardtop, you need to readjust for the soft top when you take it off.

OK. So the doors did unlock but it took too much force to open.
