  • Space saver Tbird tires and rims

Anyone ever have the space saver spare tire blow completely out while in the trunk? I have been told that this is not an uncommon occurrence, but I question that. My bird is an '02 and it seems that these tires are no longer made and nearly impossible to find.

    Thanks in advance

Don't question it for it's true. Goggle MAXXIS.com and maybe they can help you find a spare.

The other half of this question - Just what is the risk of this happening? One or two reports is not a lot of risk. There are thousands of these type spare tires in older cars of all makes and you just don't hear anything about this making it a high risk thing. Guess I am just not worried about it since our TBird spares are no different than any of the other thousands of spares out there. My 2 cents worth.

It happened to ours and to Bill Green's who we travel with routinely, so that's all the trend I need with the Firestone junk that came in our 02s. I believe Dot posted once that someone had a Maxxis blow as well.

When ours blew we were traveling on I-40. It sounded like a gun went off. The force of the explosion raised the tire cover enough to blow bits of rubber into a trunk packed with luggage, etc.

Surely there are tons of old spares in thousands of cars throughout the United States. Most never get used, but if needed it's hard to have much faith in a tire that has spontaneously combusted in other cars without the stress and heat generated by driving on the road.

David, We've been collecting data and pictures on this site of spares that have blown up in the trunks since 2010. So far we have documented 10 spares that have been made known to us. There have probably been more. Latest was from a new owner this last spring. The Tbird he bought had a blown spare in the trunk.

Firestone hasn't made that size in a spare tire for quite a few years. Ford used Maxxis tires (Maxxis T185 60R17 ) for the spares on the 2003s to 2005s. Maxxis is the only source for OEM style spares for our Thunderbirds so are the replacement tire for the 2002s. Use their website http://shop.maxxis.com/ to locate a spare. Call them if you can't find it on their website.

If your car has the original Firestone spare, waste no time in finding a Maxxis.
