Ron, did you ever get an answer? I've had a few Firestone's explode but I don't recall hearing about a maxxis going boom

Never hear of one, I am still using ten Maxxis's. I did change the 2002's several years ago.

I have an original spare in the trunk, deflated. If I need to use it, I plug in my tire pump to the power accessory to pump up the spare. No explosion potential here.

As I posted earlier, I replaced my original Maxxis spare last month even though it had never been out of the trunk. The new maxxis same size spare was ordered from Maxxis USA out of Atlanta for $159.00. My tire shop mechanic noted the old tire was extremely brittle compared to the new tire and stated " it probably would not have gone ten miles before delaminating if put in use". The new tire is production dated 2919 and hopefully good for another 14 year run in the trunk. Why risk keeping these old tires in the trunk!!!

Yes, but no one here ever reported since I have been here. Ten times $160 is more than I am willing to spend.

Agreed. Especially when you can get a real tire for less than $100.

Understandable. I'd just make sure I had one of the new ones in the car i was taking cross country at the time.

Maxxis Canada only lists a 15 and 16 inch tire not the 17...

Again, my new Maxxis spare is same size as the OEM it replaced, 185/60/R17. You can order to directly from the Maxxis USA site, or as I did, have your tire dealer order it.
Here is my original posting from 11/22/19.
There have been lots of postings over the past years about our spare tires. After the most recent discussion, I posted the following last Monday; I just ordered a new replacement OEM 185/60/R17 spare tire directly from Maxxis USA.com. My local tire dealer could not get one through his tire wholesaler, who wanted to sale me a smaller size "comparable" replacement tire. The lady at Maxxis assured me the new tire is a 2019 manufactured tire and will be delivered within five days. Cost is $159 plus shipping and taxes, so my cost will be about $200.00 when mounted. If you are interested in a new OEM spare you can go to the Maxxis USA website or call directly. The contact I dealt with was Allision at phone # 678-407-6712.
Anyone out there want a free 16 year old spare that was never on the ground? Just kidding, I would not want anyone else to risk this tire failure in the making.
My new tire was delivered today. The total costs including shipping and mounting was $190.00. The production date stamped on the tire is 2919. More than I wanted to pay, but one more issue behind me.
