And the "new" ones are now five years old, but at least they are not Firestones.

It was one (not two) reported here in June of 2014 according to my records. I tried finding the forum thread but with the last update to the site, the numbering changed on our threads. I have been unable to find it again. My records say that it was a TBN member with a 2004. Don't recall that she/he posted a photo of the tire.

For the skeptics about a MAXXIS blowing up. Found the picture but I have it attributed to a "Newman" - either a handle or a last name or a first name. Here it is. I did download it in June 2014.
I'm just following thru on this thread to say that a MAXXIS can explode. This one was 10 years old. If you haven't replaced an original spare, it should be done.

My (now former) SIL ruined the wheel of my spare by mounting it incorrectly. I followed the same route as Stewart by mounting an OEM size tire on an extra 007 tire that I already had in my garage.

Anyone know if the spare wheel is readily available?

Yup, on my 2002 Bird. Got lucky though, I had to use it 2 weeks prior. I opened the compartment to check for something about the battery and, there was my spare completely ripped open. Was quite a surprise.

Ordered one Maxxis 185/60R17 from Maxxis International website. Waiting for delivery to see how it turned out. If you follow that path, be careful to select the proper size tire when pressing the buy now button. You have to select on the down arrow next to the picture. I'll update once I receive it.

Tell us the final cost of the tire and how much you pay for replacement on the rim.

Will do. Usually my mechanic charges $30.00 for flat tire repair or tire mounting. So far, cost is a hair under $200.00

Earlier Mustangs used the same tire size for several years. I wonder what they are doing/recommending for replacements?

Received the spare Saturday 11/4 via FedEx. Manufacture date on the tire is 1823. This is a very new product. Took about a week from order to reception. Can't ask for better than that.

I appreciate the update on the Spare tire replacement since my original is dated from 2002 Firestone with no issues. Will not be using that old spare.

I ordered new one from Maxxis USA. price 198. with free shipping.
