  • Maxxis Spare

Getting the car ready for The Big Teasy, pulled out my new spare tire to swap for the original. As you can see the rim is different. It has a Ford logo, obviously was for another car. Do I need to swap rims or am I ok?

The new spare looks a lot smaller than the original in your photo.
The tires need to be the same circumference. Measure both. Check the date codes on the Maxxis tire you got with rim to make sure it's new enough. Also look for tire code to see if it's the same size as the original tire T185 60 17. Circumference needs to be the same or the new tire on it's rim will make your car drive lopsided which is not good for your axles if you ever have to use it.

Also check out that the bolt pattern matches. I don't know whether wheel offset matters.

Dot, the markings show it's a T185 60 17 and it's from 2016. I would not have bought it if it hadn't been the correct size or the seller on Ebay misled me. Unless it's mismarked. I flipped them and put them both as close to the same distance from the garage door as I could without measuring. I think it's an optical illusion. They both measure 18 1/2 from edge of rim to edge of rim.

I put the new spare in the trunk. We can always switch it before we leave. We have brand new tires, road hazard warranty and AAA, plus the tow service on my insurance. I think we're covered pretty good.
