  • Irritating Rattle in dash board @ 70MPH.

Took my car out on highway yesterday prior to coming to NO next Sunday. At about 70 MPH, a rattle starts in the dashboard somewhere? It radiates up the windshield making me first think it had something to do with the convertible top/latch/molding. So took top down and drove to confirm it was in the dashboard. Don't have a clue??? Have had AC/heater/air handler issues in the past, most recent earlier this year. I'm wondering if something didn't get put back together right, if the dash was pulled. Will take to dealer in a few minutes.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Pulling the dash on any car seems to be a great way to end up with an annoying rattle from what I've seen. Hope they find it for you. I hate rattles.

Are you sure it's not the outside rubber windshield seal? Try a piece of black electrical tape(plastic style) along the top of glass where rubber edge meets the windshield. Tape should not leave goo on glass when you GENTLY pull it back off after your next 70 mph test. Could even be at the bottom of the seal. Easy to check using the same method. Other Birds, ours included, have had this noise. A good cleaning and rubber trim conditioner fixed it.

      Good luck!

RBIRD makes a great point. That seal can make noises if not seated properly. Has the cabin air filter been changed recently? That can often lead to a problem with that seal.

Well, the dealership couldn't take the car, already booked this week. I had the windshield replaced several weeks ago and that was my first thought, but it sure seemed to be in the dash????. I'll try the tape.

SHAZAM. FIXED. Took to windshield place and that was the problem. A piece of molding that lays on top of the seal and next to the hood was the culprit.

I'm betting it's this, also. Had the same situation after our windshield was replaced (dealer broke it after r/r PCM). Found the problem from someone here at TBN (I think it was Dot).

Oops...right after I posted, your note came up that you'd found it...most excellent.

Glad you found the fix through the windshield place. I assume they realigned the cowl piece so that rubber seal would lay flat? tape would work but looks tacky though it is a stop gap fix.

Dot, I suggested the tape on the glass to isolate seal noise, if that is where it was coming from. Only temporary.
