  • '65 Lock Cylinder won't lock into place?

I have been told before you need to insert a paperclip into the hole, to reattach a new lock cylinder.

If I turn the key all the way the right it locks into place, but the key won't come out. If I turn the key all the way to the left, the lock cylinder comes out again.

What position should I insert the lock in, it seems to only fit in this posititon?

You only need the paper clip to remove the lock cylinder and you turn it to the left to Acc. To replace it the lock cylinder needs to be in the same position as when it came out...Just insert it back in and turn it to the right.......no paper clip needed. Make sure the piece that goes into the electrical part of the switch is in the same position as when you removed it. Also if you replaced the electrical switch make sure it is in the Acc postion.

Here is the position that seems to fit, I do turn the key all the way to the right does lock in the second photo above.

However the key won't pull out afterwards, when I purchased the ignition the lock cylinder and switch came already seperated.

Pretty sure I have everything else on there correctly, rubber plug just snapped into place and bezzel was an easy fit.

I think you have to put the electrical switch in the right position before you put the lock cylinder back in. You can do this with a medium size screwdriver. I think the little hole that you put the paper clip should be between 5:30 and 6:00 like your second picture when you are in correctly.

This could be the case, all the parts were sold as a '64 ignition. My T-Bird turned out ot be a '65.

That may be the reason, I am missing the part that holds the switch to the dash that screws into the front on '65 switches.

'65 and '66 should be the same and I may have a complete one if that is any help to you . '64 was the last year for that type of lock and key ( one side cut ) .

Does anyone know the correct bezel for a '65 T-Bird?

The switch housing comes through the dash and then the bezel , which is threaded, screws onto the switch housing and secures the whole unit to the dash . I am holding one in my hands at the moment . complete with key .

Thanks for the offer Martin, knew I had a '65 ignition already lying around my garage. There are also these brackets that clip onto the dash, would I need that as well?

The key assembly goes through that housing and you will note a small index nib on one of the three keyes of the assembly to line it up. then bring the whole unit through the dash opening and screw in the retainer bezel from the front . The small hole in the other side of that housing is for the light to snap into . Hope this helps.
