  • Jump Box

Does anyone have any experience with these lithium-ion "jump boxes" that I am seeing advertised everywhere?? They look handy, but would they be compatible with our car and its crazy electronics? Very curious.

They work fine. I just used my daughter's jump box on my Bird. Think of it this way , they work on new cars and the electronics on those compared to ours is like comparing a dial phone to an iPhone

Last year I purchased the one from Lowes, It didn't start my '98 CR-V (when it needed a new battery). I returned it. --- Alan

If there is any power left in the original battery it will probably start your car, if the battery is completely dead it may not, depending on size engine and size of the "jump box"

They come in many sizes and features. The key is amperage. Saw an interesting thing on them on Velocity. Bought 3 for daughter and grand kids for Christmas. A good one is around $100. I would recommend a 2K amp, NOCO.

I've had one for about a year. Used it to jump my Taurus (bad battery), the Bird (let it sit a little too long), and my son's Prius. Super easy to use - easier than jumpers; all you need to do is recharge them via electrical outlet once every three months. They are also handy as a remote charger for cellphones/computers when out camping. You can find a good one on sale @ Amazon for around $50. I bought two more for my sons for Christmas.

I bought one on Black Friday at Atwoods Ranch and Home. It was more of an impulse buy than anything else. I didn't think I could go too wrong with this deal:

              Regular Price: $59.99
              Black Friday: $39.99
              Peak Rebate: $20.00
              Atwoods Rebate: $10.00 gift card

Total $9.99 plus $3.80 tax and a $0.49 stamp to mail in the rebate form

That's a nice one, Harry. Can't beat the size.

Neither of the above are big enough to be reliable in most instances. Why would they list it in milamps ????? I still recommend a minimum of 1,000 amps but 2,000 is better for the slight diff. in price.

It's listed in milliamps because it also can charge cell phones. I've used it three times to start a rarely driven Ford Explorer when the original battery would only click-click-click.

It's not listed in miliamps, it's listed in miliamp-hours (mAh). This is indicative of the total capacity of charge available, not the rate the charge can be transferred. When looking at these, both ratings are important. If you don't have a high enough peak amp rating (also known as cold cranking amps - CCA), you won't be able to supply enough amps to the starter; but if you don't have enough mAh, you may only get one time to turn the engine over and if it doesn't start, you've discharged the jump box (more commonly known as a jump starter).

Here's a link to a good article which explains what to look for and some references to highly rated jump starters ...
After researching 40 portable jump starters and testing 12, we recommend the Weego 22s as the best for most drivers to keep in their car for emergency starts.

Finally bit the bullet and picked up a NOCO GB70 jump box. It should have enough juice to start our Bird, Fusion and 5L Coyote truck, perhaps all at once!(Just kidding)

You do realize that when you need it the box will be in the other vehicle. At least that’s how it would work for me.

Prioritize, Gene, prioritize! If I am off-road in the truck, it will be with me. Any longish trips, it will be in whatever car we are in. Or... I could just buy 2 more!
