  • Fuel pump

The fuel pump went out on my 02 a couple of weeks ago (56K miles). When the wrecker driver came to haul my car to the Ford dealer he said "I used to pick up a lot of these Thunderbirds, but I don't see many of them anymore". It struck me as really funny and a sad commentary on the 02. Mine has been a lemon as I've posted before and every time I say this is the last straw, but I keep repairing and keeping.

The first of a new model often is a little more problem prone, but if you like the car hang in there. It's only a one owner once and anything mechanical comes with a risk. Surely you recognize this car for the impractical toy that it is. When Ford tried to make the T-Bird make sense nobody wanted one

For me it's not impractical and I would drive it every day if I could trust it to work all the time.

After getting the fuel pump replaced in January, the car has been driven less than 100 miles. This past Saturday, the engine light came on so I took it to the dealer. Haven't heard a diagnosis yet. Problem after problem with this 02. I must be crazy to keep on repairing this lemon????

Maybe you’re just in love. My wife costs way more than that but I still keep her around.

In both cases, it's cheaper to keep her.

I've had a retro Thunderbird as a daily driver for the past 15+ years, you will probably have more issues from the car sitting and not being driven rather than driving it.

Probably bye-bye Tbird. Ford Dealer just called and said I"m looking at between $1K and over $2k to fix the problem, so I'm going to sell the car to the highest bidder ASAP. I've owned lots of cars in my life starting with a 58 Chevy Convertible and have spent more on repairs on this car than any 5 cars collectively I've ever owned. Been a terrible experience. Have enjoyed meeting all the people at some great TBird events, but I've had enough with this car.

Sorry to see you have to sell your T-bird
I have a 2002 and have fixed all of the known problems with it and it has been fine (knock on wood)

David I knew there was a reason to NOT buy an 02

                        Dave,

Sorry your car is costing you more money than you would like. What are they telling you is wrong with it At some point everything should be fixed. What kind of fun car will you be able to get for what you will get out of a car your trying to sell that needs $1 - 2K in repairs off of the bat? Not much I'm guessing. If it were me, I'd fix it and drive it more to get my money's worth out of it.

Tell that to Spence who has over 130000 miles on his. The poll here on TBN ( as i recall & I could be wrong)showed that the 02 had less problems. Let's face it they are 13 to 16 year old cars no matter what the mileage. In 1978 I restored a 641/2 Mustang convertible that had 83000 miles on it> I spent over 5000.00 on the restoration not including the paint. I did the work of upholstery , engine, new chrome( the real stuff) new sheet metal, new carpet and on and on. My point is that, its' a 13 year old car. That was a lot of money in 1978.

There’s a point where you feel like you’re spending good money after bad. Will this be the last repair for a while or will there be another next week? When you have it fixed is the best time to sell.
