After 170,000 miles, I thought it would be a good idea to replace the belt. YIKES, what a job. Had to take 1/2 the car apart to get at it. Upon inspecting the old one, I found small cracks all around, but it was still in remarkably good shape, no fraying at all. It probably was ok for the rest of the car's life, but why take the chance.

Thanks David. I'd guess that I got another 70k+ left on Black Beauty. Baby Blue has 29k on her so plenty of time..I did score a hard tonneau for less than $500 and an OEM car cover W/Emblem for $50!Last edited by BLACK BEAUTY; Mar 10, 2018, 06:40 AM.

Dave, I was ad'vised from a former Ford employee of 42 years that the serpeptine belt is nearing it's lifetime & recommended replacing it soon. Since my '04 Bird has 70K on it,, I was looking for some comments from other 'Bird owners. However, your comment tell me to slow down & just be aware of any potential issue. Additionally, my 'Bird is pampered & kept in a garage for the last 14 years. PK

I replaced serpentine belt on '98 Mark at 70k/19 years old. It was the original and showed little wear. I just figured at that age, it was time. Idler pulley started clicking/squeaking a year later and it was replaced. I don't count on parts that 'look okay' when they're aging. Hoses & belts failing on a road trip is not my thing.
