  • Dreaded COP??? or???

Just turned 38000 miles( Not that has anything to do with it) today and while driving at about 40 if I just give her a little gas (like to to accelerate to 45) I feel several misses, yet if I floor it she takes off like normal like a bat out of hell . I can make it miss under those conditions on demand, but when floored she downshifts and just goes. I have no check engine light. No history on this car about COP's ever being replaced. Driving conditions are all on level flat road.

From my limited experience, Jon, sounds like COP to me. Both of my birds behaved differently when a coil(s) were getting weak. One would misfire on gentle acceleration or hard with no engine light, the other went right into limp mode and engine light came on.

I've had similar experiences as both you, Jon and Richard. It was a single COP once and a double COP last year in Wisconsin.

Went to the auto parts store and had a them put a code reader. #3 misfire and check engine light now on. I can't find Dragon Fire coils anywhere, so who has used another brand other than Motorcraft.

I've installed different brands and been ok but you probably will have trouble finding 8 in a local warehouse. I'd suggest either risking some offbrand on eBay or getting 8 motorcraft from rockauto.

I replaced mine with upgraded Motor Craft coils and cost around $400.00 + cost of plugs. That was at 80,000 miles and now have 130,000 on the car with no problems. Pays to buy the best. I paid $40,000 for the car new so I use nothing but the best for it.

Anyone out there used an off brand and what is the brand. I have seen that the motorcraft are now made in China, so I am not thrilled to give Ford 50.00 apiece for coils made in China.

If I bought cheap ones I'd probably buy 2 sets and take one with me on a trip to protect myself.

Anything you buy may be from over seas along with anything we sell in the TBN store. Your TV and your cell phones come from overseas.

I bought 8 new coils on e bay last year. They were $249 from Philip Wegener (pwwegener@earthlink.com) and guaranteed for life. They are NOT Motorcraft and I was hesitant to get them but so far so good. Good luck on what ever you do.

0037, Your right, if it works don't change it, I just find that original Ford coils work for me.

I put in a set of the real cheap ebay cops in my 007 about 2 years ago. Seems like they were about 40 bucks for the set. So far so good, but when the WW needed cops I got some made by United Motor Products from Rockauto. Seems like they were about 150 for the set. That was last year. No issues with either one, though the Rockauto version appeared to be be made with higher quality products.

Do I understand correctly? You purchased from LA Phil off of Ebay? Under what seller name does he sell on Ebay?

I agree it sounds like time for you to change all the cops and plugs along with the boots and springs. Change the whole set once and delete having the misery eight times!
For higher performance I too think the Dragonfire cops are better, you can try contacting the distributer, AIP Electronics, directly at www.aipelectronics.com or call 800-261-7147.
My second choice is from NAPA auto. You can get the OEM Denso brand ( marked motorcraft by ford to cost more) or the NAPA brand Delphi.
AutoZone offers a set with lifetime warranty at about half the price of the others, but I have not had any experiences with them.
Also remember to apply dielectric grease to the plug, coil, and spring connections under the boots. I also recommend the Bosch plated body plugs and coating the threads with nickel based neversieze due to the aluminum heads. DO not over torque plugs!
Hope this helps, let us know your outcome.

Jon I have been buying the cheapest ones off Ebay that show for the DG-529 coils. I have a set in the 007, PCR, and WW and have had no problems. I put some other singles in various cars that did not say DG-529 and I have had to replace several. I have also had to replace some Ford coils that were the new level, so who knows. I am so good at changing them I no longer worry about them.
