  • A/C Problems

I know I have read a discussion on here about heater control valves, but can not find it. My 02 that I was bragging about doing so well has stopped cooling. I first thought it was Freon so I refilled it today . It held a little ( 0ne can) but still not cooling. It was working great so I do not think it is a worn out compressor. The compressor is turning and the clutch is locked in. The only thing I can think off is the heater control valve. I looked on the internet and it shows a 4 port valve and a 3 port valve. I am having difficulty locating the valve, can some one steer me in the right direction. Please share some experience with me. It is hot here in South TX, George

On 2002’s it is a little harder to get to, but it’s on pass side front of engine. I think it has 4 hoses in and out and you have to take off lots of parts to get to it. Hope you have skinny hands. You must get a special tool to remove the clamps on the hoses as pliers don’t really fit in the tight spaces. Do a search and there are probably instructions on the site here. Took me about 4 hours on the 02. It is a little easier on the laters cars.
    Good luck! Dan

      George:

Before you go to the cost and effort of replacing the heater control valve, test to see if you get a different temperature reading from the left side vs. the right side. If there is no difference the problem may not be the heater control valve. I had a similar problem and found it to be a temperature sensor located just above the gas pedal. This is about a twenty dollar part and easy to replace once you find it in this location.

Be sure that is the problem, most times that valve fails on one side or the other. Cool on one side of the car heat on the other side. Seems you have no air on either side.

Thanks for the replies, Valve may not be problem. The temp is the same from both sides, and yesterday It felt like it was cooling a little. I will look for the temp sensor and check it.. I just had the a/c repaired on my F450, the compressor locked up at idle and actually stalled the engine. I will post what I find, this is my daily driver when we are home. I will be using it for another 3 weeks so if I do not get it fixed now it will not be that bad. We full time RV and will be on the road again in Aril so the Bird will get a cover , a oil change, a full tank of gas, and a good dose of stabil. Again thanks for the replies.

i just had mine repaired. It was the blend door on the farthest passenger side, which required tearing out the whole dash. $1000 later I have AC again.

The part I mentioned in an earlier post was a Cabin Air Temperature Sensor, Motorcraft #
YH1504. Rock Auto stocks and lists it for $16.42.

When you first start the cold engine check the AC, if it's cold and then turns hot as the engine warms up it could be the valve. I have had both side fail at the same time and the system default is full heat so it may seem like the AC isn't working when the engine has warmed up. The difference in ouputs on the valve is 2002 verses 2003-2005. The last one I bought off of eBay, they had the one for the wrong year listed.

Wasn't a huge deal, they took it back, but had to wait a day for my shop to order the correct one and paid twice the price.
