  • A/C Compressor

I think I am close to having to replace the compressor. I have had to add refrigerant twice in the last year and the compressor seal is leaking. Has anyone had any experience with the Four Seasons brand compressor? Ford wants $750.00 for the replacement compressor only. RockAuto.com offers the Four Seasons compressor assembly with clutch, expansion valve and dryer/accumulator for $225.00. Obviously I am tempted to order the RockAuto part due to costs difference and my growing bias against Ford.

My 2003 developed a slow leak after 5 years. In 2012 I replaced the original compressor with a new Motorcraft which started leaking after a couple of weeks. My mechanic suggested I try a different brand since I had now gone through 2 Motorcraft A/C compressors. He installed an Omega compressor which has been doing fine since then. I have had a lot of cars and never needed to replace a compressor until I encountered Motorcraft so you can see that I am not impressed with their brand. I have the original Motorcraft compressor in case the next owner is a purist.

The expansion valve appears to be a royal pain to replace in my 2003. I almost think one would have to remove intake manifold to do the job. Just replace the compressor and perhaps drier (to keep warranty). My 2003 has had the manifold and tube assy replaced and I believe the compressor before I got it. Sytem leaks freon and can't find leak. If it lasts a few months I'll just keep on putting in freon and let it go dry over the winter.

I had to face reality! I am too old and fat to try to work under the bird. I found a local mechanic with some experience on these cars as well as the Lincoln LS, so I took the bird to him for the A/C work, new Omega compressor and dryer. While there he put it on the overhead rack and showed me the crack in the bottom of the thermostat housing I could not find. Also having the serpintine belt changed since it was glazed from the oil and coolant getting on it. At least the underside of the car will get a good steam cleaning!
