  • New Radio Causing telescopic steering wheel problems??

Looking here for suggestions. I had a new radio installed and after the car is running when I take the key out sometime the wheel does not retract and then other times it starts to and I hear clicking from the steering wheel and from behind the drivers side, possible from the trunk. Now here is the strange part if I put the key in after the the wheel finally retracts and take it out it operates perfect (in and out) and now matter how many times I do this it works as it should , Yet if I start the car and then shut it off the telescopic wheel has the aforementioned symptoms almost every time. I am going back to the audio shop on Saturday and of course they already are saying that they feel this can't be anything they have done. so any suggestions or thoughts will be greatly appreciated. A couple of side notes is that the radio is equipped with a backup camera and voice control. the car has 38000 miles and is a 2002

The steering wheel telescoping gets it signals & power from the instrument cluster.

If the audio shop was up under the dash near the connections between the cluster & the steering wheel there is the possibility some wiring loosened.

Or maybe the switch on the column has been accidentally damaged as the new audio was installed

Or maybe this problem has just happened.
    Something certainly is intermittent.

A Big thank you goes out to Steelblue 5505 and as a result of his help( via messages) it took less than a minute for the audio shop to fix the problem. They now installed a diode in series with the connection to the back up light. and the whole problem went away. The installer had done a few retros in his 25 years of experience, but he can't recall if he ever installed a diode in others. so this could be unique to an 02. The truth needs to be known that people of this forum in so many ways makes owning a retro more special. I love that car

Ten new members joined today so far. The few that I checked joined around 1:15 AM this morning and they are from London Az. June 2020 has 36 new members. Birds are getting popular....
Seeing that there is actually no place called London, Arizona makes it even more conspicuous. There is the London Bridge in Lake Havasu, Arizona, but that's the extent of any "London" being in this state.

The only other London that I know of is in Ontario. Some of our Canadian friends have no doubt been there.
