"Cars" are out of fashion. Market is moving toward pick-up, SUV and crossovers. Pickup, SUV and crossover vs."sedan" market segment moved from 50/50 in 2008 to 65/35 this year. (Read last week that by 2030 Ford plans to sell 90% pickup, SUV and crossover; Chrysler will be 97% at the same time.) Don't count on value of "cars" going up when that's not what buyers want. Thunderbirds are just old cars. Our old cars but old cars just the same.
We're lighter. We're faster. If that don't work, we're nastier.
We're gonna make history.
A time will probably come when an "old" retro TBird will bring a good price, but most of us will never see it happen.
There are still many car lovers in today's world, but compared to the era that most of us grew up in, not even close. Demand and supply will dictate the price.
There was a time when some new car dealerships in my area would soap up their showroom windows, leaving one "peephole", in anticipation of the new model announcements. As a young kid, I'd walk a few miles along a local avenue to see the new cars at the dealerships and gather catalogs. (I can't imagine going into a Pontiac dealer in 1964 to see the new GTO and having the salesman say "and, it can drive itself!")
I remember a crowd of showroom lookers when the first Mustang came out.
Now?
There's more excitement over a new phone.
But, I still get an occasional "beautiful car" comment when I take out the 2003, and a lot of "thumbs up" when I cruise the 64 Galaxie.

what a really low mileage sells for((not what is asked for)these days is probably undervalued as for sure someday a pristine retro will bring in much. as for the average retro? I think are valued about right. you get a nice fun ride that is unique enough to get the comments but still depending on where you live ,there are quite a few around. time will change this answer I am pretty sure as well
No, too many owners think they have a "classic retro car" which should bring that type of money. What they have is just another car. Have fun with it till you can't!

Wife and I had a window seat at Cracker Barrel Saturday morning with a view of the parking lot. About 30 vehicles were visible and only one was a "car." The rest were 28 SUVs and 2 pickup trucks. You may draw your own conclusion.
No. I think most of the current owners come from the day back when half of the fun was being able to work (tinker) on your hobby car. Today that half of the fun to own is gone. These 02 to 05s are just another used car that for us older folks is fun and nostalgic to drive and own. Believe me they will not appreciate in value enough in most of our life times to make a difference is our financial market standing. I drive mine every time I can because I love to. My 49 year old son called me yesterday to remind me to take good care of "his car". Told him it may be a high mileage car by the time he gets it. LOL
My 35 year old son has no interest in my cars. My 30 year old daughter married into wealth so nothing there either.........I guess that leaves me...and Jane
"Value" (ie price) is tied to scarcity and demand. While there is a healthy amount of demand for the cars there is also a ton of inventory of cars for sale in both low and high miles with asking prices from $5,000. to $35,000. I think most of the low mileage cars for sale are overpriced (which is why they don't sell). It would be interesting to have a survey of retro Tbirds for sale nationwide at a any given time compared to production numbers and then compare that ratio to another low production car.

Anything is only worth what someone else is willing to pay. I too think we retro bird owners are biased toward thinking our birds are worth more than the market will pay. Reality gave me a poke in the eye when I offered to give my prized PCR to my granddaughter for her first car. She graciously turned me down saying she really rather wait for a Honda Hybrid! So I will keep it, enjoy it, and hope my 11 year old grandson will want it when his turn comes. It will be a true low mileage "classic" by then.
