  • Finally Found Phantom Noise

Ever since our 2018 trip to Pappasitos we have had a noise at speeds mostly between 70 and 80 mph. Some of you are aware from past posts. When in the drivers seat it sounds like its coming from the passenger rear wheel. Bonnie insisted that it was coming from the engine compartment and had something to do with hitting a racoon in September and $4,300 repair bill for Grundy. It sounded like a revolving noise. the volume increase significantly with speed but the cadence sound pattern was consistent. I had tires replaced, balanced and then rebalanced via Road Force balance. Checked the suspesion and found a small noise that might have amplified when vibrating at highway speed. It was a topic of discussion at our recent Oklahoma Prarie trip. Several people felt I should repace the bearings. When at Crystal Bridges Bill Green said it seemed it is something flapping or viibrating.

After that 1,700 mile trip we were both ready to push the car off the Mississippi bridge and call Grundy. One last try. I layed on my back on the garage floor and scooted along slowly patting and tapping all the bottlom protection shields and checked any thing that made a noise. When I got to the front of the car I reached in the lower air scoop area under the grill and felt some sort of loose inner plastic assembly that seemed to be laying in the cavity without attachment. I contcted Mike Schwartz and he sent drawings of all the plasticwork behind the nose cone of the car.

Took car to my shop for an oil change and had them check it out. The clips had failed on some sort of assembly and as the rush of wind came into the cavity it caused the loose assembly to flap against the nose cone. Shop installed four small screws to join the bottom road shield and the flapping assembly. Road tested at 85mph and finally have peace and quiet.

To summarize, Bonnie was right about you having a screw loose?....

I had an 84 Fiero that had a rattle that drove me nuts. Had it at the dealer many times and they could not find it. Was down in Indy for the time trials and it was just before sunrise. Rattle was going, the guy in the car with me was crawling all over looking for the source. He knocked my sunglasses off the rearview mirror and the rattle stopped!
