  • QAA Stainless hood accent trim for the scoop

Has anyone purchased the stainless accent trim piece for the scoop offered by QAA and available on Amazon? (https://smile.amazon.com/QAA-FITS-TH...aa+thunderbird) I wondered about the quality and whether it was possibly a more easily available and inexpensive alternative to the chrome scoop that Ford offered back in the day. QAA seems to offer several other stainless trims options for the retrobird. If anyone has tried them, what's your experience?

    Thanks,
    Duane

If memory serves correctly the Ford part was a complete replacement of the hood scoop and this one is a piece that fits over your existing hood scoop. Believe Quickdraw has commented on this previously. Harry, any thoughts?

No personal experience, but I think everyone who has bought thesse "stick on" chrome hood scoop trim from Amazon and eBay has been disappointed by and large from comments I've read here on TBN. I wouldn't waste my money on it.

Well yes, it is a thin flat piece of shiny stainless steel. It just sticks on top of the existing hood scoop.
From the side, at several feet away it may not look too bad but looking straight on from the front it would be almost impossible to see. I guess it's up to the individual but to me it's a toss-up on whether it is an improvement over the original painted scoop. I think I would go with the painted one if I couldn't get one of the Ford versions.

How is Jon (carnutz) doing on his chrome-wrap scoop?

Harry can't speak for Jon, but I tried it and while there was not much of a curve to it, but enough to screw it up. Glad you brought it up as I sanded it down and was going to try chrome paint. (Do not expect good results!) Film at 11:00 (some day!)

I sent Jon my original hood scoop to work with. Like Bill, he said the curvature did not lend to good results. I've got the OEM chrome on Black Beauty, but it appears that Baby Blue will have to wait...a long time

If the chrome job is a small one like the hood scoop you may want to look into Mission Models Premium Model Paints Chrome & Black Gloss Base.
Go to missionmodels.com/collections/chrome High reviews. Maybe it will work for you.

Back to the original question; the ends of those things tend to soon straighten themselves out and detach from the hood, looking ridiculous.
Fortunately for me, I discovered that in time to replace it with the real thing, while they were still available. About $60 difference in price.

Maybe Jon could try that on the scoop I sent him?

I may be wrong but I thought these were available at one time from Thunderbird Concepts which is no longer doing business. In any case, I have seen the car with this in place and it looks ok on the lighter colored cars but on the deeper and darker colors it just breaks up the lines of the hood, I think.

Ned it was defiantly an upgrade. Looks good on black.

The original piece from Ford fits the best & looks like something that should have been on the car from the factory. It looks perfect on every body color. A absolute perfect piece. If it doesn't replace the actual hood scoop trim than it isn't the original from Ford.

Ok guys sanding the tape off wasn't my strength. Painted with Dupli-Color chrome paint. Thinking if you started with a unmolested scoop (and remember that all the guys who bought a chrome piece still have their originals somewhere on a shelf) that the chrome paint might work until Earl Butterworth finds his box of chrome scoops that he hid somewhere!

This piece cost $15 from a member and was originally white. (Excuse the bad picture--it actually looks better than the picture!)
