  • Weird Oil Leak

I have always changed my own oil in every car I have owned, including my Retro's. Finding the correct Motorcraft filter has been a problem, so I have used an STP filter. Three times now I have experienced an oil leak after approx three thousand miles. The filter comes loose. Finally I questioned a Ford dealer and was advised they have experienced this same thing with after market filters. I now have two Motorcraft filters on order so I don't have this problem again.

When I worked at a Ford dealership one of our used pickups (I believe a Mazda-actually a Ford) was used to procure parts 30 miles away. When the driver got back into the shop with the parts and drove the pickup out it had a line of oil and we stopped her. The filter fell to the ground! I'd say it's pretty rare to have a filter get loose and leak multiple times. How tight are you getting them?

I not only hand tighten them, I use a filter wrench as well. I don,t know what causes the filters to work loose, or just the seal breaking down and leaking.

Most of what I hear about STP filters is not good. Maybe try another brand. I know you have some coming from the dealer but you should also be able to get Motorcraft online. Might be the STP oil change reminder,
