Secondly, with the recent JD Powers report naming the '02 top in it's class, it occured to me that maybe the car performed so well because no-one is actually driving theirs...so...I'm just curious....how many birds here are arm candy, and how many earn their keep? My bird is a daily driver and though my daily driving is only about 9K a year, one of the main reasons I bought it was because it's fun to drive...the other reason of course was because it's a beautiful, comfortable, classic, American icon...okay, who am I kidding...the car is a chick magnet!
Care and upkeep of course increases, as do the risks of dings, dents, scrapes, curbings, parking pylons, collateral damage due to circumstances pertaining to a certain cocktail waitress and her ex-boyfriend...(just kidding) and all other inherent dangers that come with navigating a large city day in and day out, but if I have to spend 45 minutes to travel 15 miles of California Freeway, there's no car I'd rather do it in.
Ditto, I drive the snot of mine. 15000 miles in the last 8 months (bought it Jan 10 this year). Also get to sit in SoCal traffic and putt putt along. Great car for that along with the open and windy roads of the mountains.

Hey Claude,
Saw a guy on a show called Top Gear on the Discovery channel tonite take one of these $600,000.00 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and do some 360 burnouts http://www.mbusa.com/microsite/slr/index.jsp
Talk about
John, there is a big difference how you drive the ones YOU DO NOT OWN. I would love to be a test driver, but the only ones I get to test drive are the ones I am interested in buying.

Nope Claude, there is NOT a big difference in " how I drive the ones I DO NOT OWN".
I treat other peoples property the same as I would if it were mine, or even with more respect. If I break mine I'm the one that has to be with out a ride for a while not them. I would push my machine much further that I would someone else's.
My point was that the owner of the car on the show saw nothing wrong with letting the driver push it to it's limits and not worry about breaking something that can be replaced.

Maybe, I should have clarified. I do not treat friends cars badly. And if someone, a car owner, car manufacturer etc. wants me to flog one, I'll be glad to do it. I will not tear mine up, however, by doing drifting, burnouts or anything else I consider dumb and reckless. An ocasional run at near top speed on a deserted road is fun and not too tough on my equipment. Just because the owner of the Mercedes Mclaren SLR does't have any sense or has more money than sense doesn't change my mind.

Let's see, so your saying driving at near top speed on a deserted road where anything can happen with no one around is not dumb and reckless, but smoking tires at parking lot speed is??????????
Or is it that running you engine at near redline is not as hard on it as getting some rubber at 3 to 4000 rpm?????????

John, you are such an expert in performance cars, I am suprised you would try to drive a Tbird to limits it wasn't designed for. You cannot make a Tbird what it is not. It is a relatively quick cruiser, certainly not a "performance" car made for hard driving. I think most of the automotive magazines will agree with me on that. Don't you have another "performance" car in your garage that you can "push to its limits" (and yours). Heck, I'm not sure my Tbird is as fast as the "family" car (2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP) I traded in for it. I bought it as Ford says as "a relaxed cruiser".

Huh??
Weren't you the one who said

That doesn't sound like cruising to me
But if you've ever been to Detroit for the annual Dream Cruise,
there is a lot of tire smoking from those cruisers!

John, there is a lot of difference in the stress placed on an auto in doing a high speed run (hardly any of these cars get to redline in 5th gear anyway; also you have the rev limiter protection) and the stress caused by 360 burnouts, scratching off, drifting etc.

The stress placed on an auto in doing a high speed run if something breaks is a hell of a lot more expensive to repair than if something breaks doing a 360 burnout.
Hey Claude, either you know a lot more about deviant car handling than I do or you lapsed into you Senior Lottery Forum. I never heard the term "scratching off" and when I googled it could not find any car references on the first 10 pages of links only lottery references.
