  • Fuel pump for 2002 Thunderbird

    Hello Y'all:

I need to replace my fuel pump on my 2002 bird , does anyone know , how many pumps are there? it confusing when I search for it online , it says right or left , do they both sit on the gas tank?

    appreciate any inputs.....

    Thanks....

You have saddle tanks therefore there are two separate fuel tanks. One feeds the other. Access to the fuel pumps requires the removal of the interior bulk head behind the seats. I have been told that a special tool to remove at least one of the pumps is required. And here we have another example of a "Better idea from Ford"

Has anyone else experienced fuel pump failure on one other than a 2002?

Prevailing theory is to avoid letting the tank go below 1/4 full as the pump is cooled by the fuel. Don’t know whether it really works but it also can’t hurt.

007Ctuiser. I've heard of the 1/4 tank theory too. I had to replace the pump on my 96 mark viii at 200k. My Grand Marquis has 255k and 2000 Explorer has 220k without replacing pumps. I had 2 94 Crown vice a few yrs ago. One had 260k and other one 240k or so without fuel pumps and only one had water pump.

I had to replace my fuel pump in my 02 T Bird back in March. I never let the tank get below quarter tank, but I did let the
car sit to long, which is what I believe helped the pump go bad,

Bought a new right side fuel pump from parts geek for $81.00 and installed myself. You can rent the tool from Auto Zone,
and it is not hard to replace, but is a tight working area.

                      New pump works great.
