Ah yes, the Good Ol Days. I had a 58 Ford as a teenager that I tried to wind out one day. Got to about 90-95 on a straight stretch of road, then a gradual curve came into the picture. The power steering seized up and it was all I could muster to navigate that curve. Once I got slowed down to about 80 the steering came back. I believe the pump just started to cavitate at that speed. Never tried that trick again. No, didn't have to change underwear but it was close.
One of the scariest cars ever for me was a 69 Mustang Boss 429. I worked at a Ford Dealer and took one for a "Test Drive" after doing a valve set. Those were the days when it was all about HP. Steering, suspension and brakes were secondary. That thing could accelerate faster than my 20 yr old brain could compute.

As for the Merlot, the day I picked it up, on the way home, I put the hammer down and it cut out at 140ish. I'm happy now.......we just go with the flow.

Howlandd That's how I got my name 428PI. That's a 428 Police Interceptor engine. It came out of a late 60's Mercury cop car. Put it in my 65 Galaxie after overhauling it with a cam, forged pistons, etc. It would bury my speedo even with the 3.54 gears. Very unsafe though with manual drum brakes all the way around. I was surprised one day though when a 57 Chevy passed me and I couldn't catch him. The small block chevy had better high end rev capability.

That's the same story today, Keith, only reversed. The new Camaro will smoke the new Mustang GT off the line, but the 'Stang will bury it with its high-end capability.

            Not really. Leaving the ZL1 and the GT350 out of the comparisons. The SS runs a 4.1 0-60 and 12.5 1/4. The GT runs a 4.3 0-60 and a 12.6 1/4

Way to close to call especially if there are amateur drivers at the wheel. Any wheel spin or wheel hop or bouncing the rev limiter can be the difference. Definitely one isn't going to bury the other though in a clean run by both.

another following Paul in oregon this year, 110 in a passing lane.I know it is not that fast but what a smooth ride it was..One time I was driving a stock 72 superbeetle at 110(the needle was on the oil mark way past the 90 on the speedo) that scared the bejeebers out of me as every slight bump in the road the car lifted and came back down really slowly. if anythiing at all had gone wrong damn thing would have rolled more times than I could count and I surely would never have owned a bird.I was 16

1962, six of us in my 57 BelAir driving down the Jersey Tpke on a Sunday night heading back to Ft Dix. They were all sleeping or hung over or both. Perfect place to put the foot to the floor. It was a few miles before the Ft Dix exit. So, that's what I did. As the speed increased, they slowly woke up.

I don't know how fast I was going because I'm pretty sure that I had already swapped out the 3:36 rear for a 4:11 without changing the speedo gear, but I buried the tach.

1961, 57 Olds 98 convert, top down, three of us in the car, again, two were "sleeping". Buried the needle coming down the Palisades Interstate Parkway from NY State. They woke up around the 100 mph mark.

There was a stretch of road (rt 46) on the Jersey side of the GW Bridge that was perfect for high speed racing. One night, we heard about an accident, and went to look at the results. One car hadn't been removed yet. We drove by slowly.

A Stingray had gone off the road at high speed, and was in the woods. The rear half of the car was all fiberglass shreds. Don't know if it was the result of the gas tank or the impact with the trees.

After that 120 mph run with my Vette, I never went above 80. (I was always more into acceleration than top speed.)

Yep, I can remember seeing 120 MPH on the speedo about 1963, when flooring it in my '57 Fairlane on an empty road coming back into town. Scared my little brother though! LOL!

Our T-Bird will get up to 100 MPH and beyond, pretty quick from 80.
