  • Grundy Insurance

We got our bill for Grundy Insurance for the Bird today. They valued our car at $33,000 and we all know this isn't a real price for these cars. The price for insurance at this value was $500.00 for a year. They would pay us this amount if the Bird was totaled. We called them and lowered the value of the car to $24,000. We lowered our payment to $387.00 per year. Just something to look at if you have Grundy Insurance. I know I can replace my Bird for $24,000 or well below that value if it's totaled.

    Just for your information.
They are Here. Scotty, beam me up!

Good move, Spence. No reason to be over insured.

I’ve been using Grundy for 20 years. Just picked up my bird and insured it for $14,000. I think my premium is about $150.00/year.

We used Grundy for a few years and saved $$$, but I couldn't live with the limitations for driving the Bird. I'd rather pay more and be able to drive the car whenever and for whatever purpose. The downside is that if the Bird were totaled, we wouldn't get near what Grundy would pay. But that's a risk worth taking for us.

I think by keeping the payout for a totaled bird at a reasonable amount, you are more likely that Grundy will not try to "fix" a severely injured vehicle. If you have a wreck that causes $15K in damage but is "fixable" and you have a stated value of $30+K, it seems like Grundy would opt to try to repair the car and hang on to the $15+K. However, if you are insured for a more reasonable $20K, they might be more likely to pay you and total the car.

I don't want a car that should have been totaled in my garage, so I lowered my coverage a few years ago like Spence did.

Paul your comments are what made me post the following in another thread. Still think it might be too good to be true,

Just got an e-mail from Hagerty about their Cherished Salvage Program. Agreed upon value is paid and you get to keep the car if you wish without a reduction in payout.

Anybody heard of/used. I'm not a believer in " a free lunch anywhere" and this seems to good to be true at first blush!

I don't find Grundy's restrictions that onerous, unless the car is truly your primary daily driver:

"How Can I Use My Car?
Grundy wants you to enjoy your car, not keep track of mileage like some programs with limitations. Therefore, we give you unlimited miles for pleasure driving and in collector car-oriented activities. It is even OK if occasionally you drive your collector car to work to show it off to friends. However, your collector car must not be used as a daily driver. We require you and all licensed drivers in your household to have a modern car for everyday use.

When you have your car at home, it must be kept in an enclosed, secure garage when not in use. If you are away from home on extended outings your car is fully protected if you must park it outside, for example in a hotel parking lot. Grundy coverage includes Trip Interruption that reimburses you for hotel and repair costs in the event of a breakdown, and we also reimburse you for towing and labor charges up to $250. You can count on Grundy as you cruise."

In July I renewed, with an $18k stated value, for $306.00.
