  • Battery Tender

Probably beaten this topic up but I'm going to ask about alternatives to Deltran's products. Any (cheap) better alternatives.

Guess my real question is about the Battery Tender Junior. Is it sufficient for our cars? Don't want to tspend more money than necessary but don't want to make the cheap mistake. What's the difference between the $25 Junior and Deltrans that cost twice as much? Is the unit at twice the cost worth it?

Also any better tenders out there?

I have 5 DieHard 6V/12V Battery Charger & Maintainer, model 28.71219 that I have been using for years. I leave them on year round on my "occasional" cars and the batteries are always ready and reliable to use. If the memory is right I think they were between $25 to $30. Haven't been to a Sears for a while now so don't know if they still have them.

Of course we know that Sears products are rebranded but I couldn't find anything that indicates who the manufacturer is to know if it is available under a different brand.

O.K. let me apologize to the group for giving our resident poet/humanitarian/humorist/scientist/surfer an opening here!

Hey they are building a Raising Cane's chicken tenders restaurant right down the road. Never heard of them. Can the chicken tenders be as good as they claim?

Think I'll try the three finger meal when the restaurant opens! Can.t wait for the poet that don't know it's next response. What an opening!

Let me try again. Is the Deltran BATTERY tender sufficient for our cars? Is this $25 unit worth it or is it worth it to spend for their more expensive BATTERY TENDER?

Are there any better BATTERY TENDERS out there?

I use ' battery tender ' junior on each of my stored cars . Permanent hook up with quick disconnect . Also have inline fuse protection . Get a good 10 years + out of my battery . Years ago I had a friend who worked for the railroad and he gave me a ' rectifier ' that they used to have on their battery terminals at intersections etc. , Used that for years during the winter months . Still have it and used it as well . Same idea as the modern day tenders .

I would say that the Battery Tender Junior is not sufficient for the 2002 to 2005 Thunderbirds because it is only .75 amps. The Battery Tender plus is 1.25 amps and is a good fit for our Thunderbirds. Plus it is warranteed for 10 years! You can buy a Battery Tender plus for $40. to $45 on ebay. I also have some of the Granite Battery Savers they are a little more money and they are nice. I would say that the Battery Tender Junior is good for older cars with no computers and other electronics that drain the battery.

Nothing but the best for my baby. I can highly recommend this one and the brand is recommended by the esteemed Senor Gar of TBN. The cost is $75 but I believe that it is worth it. It will desulfate the battery if needed, is very safe, foolproof, and works in all weather conditions. No proof of this but I feel that keeping the electrical system on an even keel helps prolong the life of those expensive electronic modules.

Bill, I have a battery tender junior that I bought new in 2001 for my then new Harley. I have constantly used this for any & all cars I have had since then. Used it on the 'Bird as it sat more than any other car. I now use it (switching between mustang & mark 8) and have never had a problem with charge/electronics. It's a trickle charger so keeping it on when vehicle is not in use has always extended battery life on all vehicles. And, the quick connect/disconnect is so easy.

As I remember, you fix sulfation by overcharging. Make sure your battery is vented good.
For overcharging, you need over-voltage during the overcharge cycle.
It is hard to imagine that this small charger can do much overcharge electrical damage to FEM, REM and other Tbird modules..

Raising Cane's is AWESOME. Consistently great tenders fast and at a reasonable price.

As for tenders ... they all work under the same principle and you only pay more for bells/whistles (more lights, 6v/12v option, etc.). Some will charge a low battery faster, but if you're just using it to keep a battery charged, pretty much any reputable brand will do (and a lot of no-name brands, too). More amps just means a faster charge ... not a better one.
