  • A warning about Grundy insurance.

Today I spoke with Tony at Grundy for clarification of a few questions that I had. I find their advertisement ( quoted below) to be extremely misleading. This insurance is ONLY for “car event” driving according to Tony. My specific question was about what constituted “pleasure driving” in their estimation. I asked about taking the car on vacation for a few days, or to go sight seeing and the like. According to Tony, you are NOT covered, and that is NOT pleasure driving somehow. Even though to only reason to go on vacation is for pleasure. Please read Grundy's statement on vehicle usage taken verbatim from their site.

“How can I use my car?

Grundy wants you to enjoy your car. Not to keep track of mileage like other programs. Therefore, we give you unlimited miles for pleasure driving and in collector car activities. It is even OK to if occasionally you drove your collector car to work to show it off to friends. We require you and all licensed drivers to have a modern car for everyday use.

When you have your car at home, it must be kept in an enclosed, secure garage when not in use. If you are away from home on extended outings your car is fully protected if you must keep it outside, for example in a hotel parking lot. Grundy coverage includes Trip Interruption that reimburses your hotel and repair cost in the event of a break down, and we also reimburse for towing and labor charges up to $250. You can count on Grundy as you cruise.”

How is that not misleading? So, this is a warning to those that have gone with this 'coverage'. Be aware that what you read above is NOT what you are getting.

When we bought the current IG, we priced classic car prices through several companies (including those named here) and found our AARP Hartford policy was lower, primarily due to bundled insurance with home and cars. In addition, AARP Hartford put no limit on the number of miles we can drive (which no doubt will be less than 6K per year). When we plugged in 5K per year on the classic car sites, they told us our driving time/miles was high for a classic. Not sure if that's normal, but that's what we got from them.

I mentioned on another thread here recently that we had Grundy insurance for a while and didn't like the restrictions for driving the car. One huge downside of regular insurance [besides the higher cost] is if the car is totaled, you won't get paid near what you can with Grundy. But we're willing to take the risk given how little the car is driven now.

There’s almost always a show or cruise night somewhere. Perhaps you were taking an alternate route to get there.

As Gene stated, perhaps just an issue with the submitted route... Check with Miss Grundy again.

I just got off the phone with Carrie from Hagerty. The mileage limit is 5,000 per year. The plus is that you can take your car on vacation, or where ever, without restriction up to that 5,000 mile limit. You are covered in a hotel parking lot overnight even if you are sight seeing. She even mentioned a club discount possibility. I posted the discount info in another post. We signed up for Hagerty. Thank you Miss Carrie for all your help.

if I had a 5000 mile limit I would be ok if I never took a vacation, or went to an event. cause I like to just drive when the weather is nice and show off my bird.
my first year with it I drove 6,500 miles and that was with just a short part of "thunder out west."

in checking with insurance policies I admitted to a grundy agent I drove over 5,000 miles but I met all the other qualifications he said "thank you for your honesty ,sorry we can't do that"

Sadly I have to get regular insurance, but it beats trying to make sure I don't drive too far on beautiful days where I might go 400 miles for the day any time I care to.

                  figured I needed something here

I would need to buy another “modern car” to get coverage.

When I had State Farm they insured my 64 Pontiac, full coverage for $200/year. I don't recall any mileage restrictions, Currently have Hagerty with 03 Bird, 2011 Vette, 64 Catalina 250/500/100, 500 deductible - $1000/yr for all three.

Check around. I've had Condon & Skelly classic car insurance on my collector cars for 25-years. They are pretty straight-forward. Never had a problem or restriction. But if you are using your car for daily driving, you're going to have to insure it as a daily-driver. The biggest advantage to collector car insurance is agreed-value insurance.
