Spring Cleaning Time!

Quite a task to clean it up, Joe. Last year mice got in my '80 for the first time (winter stored every year since 1980). I found a nest under the rear seat. Fortunately I caught it early and the nest was just started, but even then it was a mess to clean up. White vinegar can be used to kill the odor on surfaces and is reportedly supposed to eliminate their scent trails that they follow. Wiping with vinegar was the last step after cleaning the mess. I removed the seat and washed the floor panel where the nest was with various cleaners, then wiped with white vinegar and let it dry. The seat foam pad over the nest has been nibbled and got tainted with mouse "essence" so following what I read I made a paste of baking soda and let it dry on it, then cleaned and repeated a number of times. In my case both the floor and seat foam were not areas that could be stained or damaged by the cleaning process. If doing this on a visible surface probably best to test an area first. Strangely, I read that sunlight helps kill the smell so, figuring if couldn't hurt, each time I applied the baking soda paste to the foam I let it dry in the sun. I also parked the car out in the sun when the seat was out. It took repeated cleaning and washing but finally got it clean and odor free. Not a fun task.

Not looking forward to cleaning this up.
I didn't find a nest, just the mess which has me a little nervous not knowing how many may be lurking in the car. I have a bunch of different traps coming so I'll see how it goes.
As far as the actual cleaning, I've heard (read/searched) bleach and water mix sprayed on and clean up with paper towels. The vinegar after the cleaning sounds like a great idea, thanks!
The seats and carpet are stored away in the shed and I'm not getting much of an odor, so hopefully I can just give them a light cleaning. People have also told me that different pet cleaners are good for upholstery odors.
The weather hasn't cooperated much as far as getting to do cleaning outside! The car is up on stands right now, doing a few things then I'll be doing a lot things out in the sun.

Spent about 4 hours, a roll of paper towels and a bleach/water mix to clean things up today. Actually doesn't smell too bad at all!
Lesson learned with this fiasco, if it's going to sit for any kind of time at all, I'm leaving traps in and around it.
I'll start cleaning up the carpet and seats later this week, weather is going to suck for the first part of the week.

I had an issue with these little buggers in my old motorhome years ago. I was almost at the point of financial combustion but finally caught all of them and got it cleaned up. Fortunately, they did not migrate out of the basement which made clean up easier.
I used a variety of traps but the most successful was the good old fashioned wooden traps baited with a dab of peanut butter.
good luck with your clean up, I don't envy you at all.
