The bait makes them thirsty and they go looking for water. Once you have cleaned all the mouse poop out, spray some clear lacquer on the areas to seal in the smell and prevent other mice from following the trail. I hates them mieces to pieces.

I keep bait traps under the car between the front and back wheels, logic is the critter will have to climb up a wheel for entry. I also keep a pair of the Victor brand plug in "high frequency" mouse preventers on the garage wall by the car. Not sure they actually work on the mice, but do make for a nice night light. Either way no more vermin problems since taking precautions. I also have the house, yard, and garage commercially treated monthly. My car does stay garaged and covered for weeks at a time.

Caught 2 more today, one in and one outside the car. Traps are working great!

But it looks like there's been some activity in there since I cleaned it Saturday, found some droppings and a stain that I know I cleaned. Not sure if it's the ones that I found today.

Any idea how long I should wait until I can start putting this thing back together? I don't want to be wasting my time for nothing, I can wait it out. Give it time until there's no longer any signs of activity???

I keep the traps in my garage baited all the time and on average catch 2 or 3 a month. Most activity is in the fall when they are looking for winter quarters, but still catch them year round. So far, except for the one time two years ago, it seems I am successfully catching them when they come in the garage and not in the cars yet. I know this doesn't answer your question about them still getting in your car, but may help you decide about keeping the traps active all the time.

Definitely going to keep them going all the time John. I actually found a small one this morning on a glue trap that's in there.

I think I'm going to try one more cleaning, but with ammonia this time. Like Peter said above, I have to kill the trail in and around the car. The ammonia should do it in the car and I think I'll leave small cups of ammonia outside the car to keep them away. Hopefully the smell from that will do it.

I haven't seen much that Goo-Gone won't get out of a carpet; can't hurt anything to try...

I use hydrogen peroxide. Cheap to find. It takes care of cat urine, poo, and vomit and the smells, but you do have to get down on your knees and wipe it all up and get the rug dry.

My car has been little used during the pandemic, sitting outside under a car cover. So far I haven't seen anything inside, but wonder if the many rodents will find it shelter as fall rolls in. Thanks, Joe, for sharing your miseries and solutions with us, they just may yet be needed. I hope your problems are finally gone for good!

Our sometimes feral cat sleeps on the garaged, covered Thunderbird at night. Best "mouse trap" around.
