  • Embroidered Boot.

I made my second boot today. This one I had the T-Bird on. I still am not happy with the way it turned out. Not that it is bad or does not fit I just think it could be better. Maybe the next one. Anyway this one is for sale $500. I will even pick up the shipping.

Have a boot and never use it. But good luck with selling it.

It's looking like you need to balance the size of each fold panel and make a center seam. Aesthetics will make a difference in sales, even without the embroidery.

I need to figure out how to eliminate the fold lines completely. I think a 1/2 layer of dacron will bounce it back to shape after the fold. Trial and error unless I take one apart.

You are doing an excellent job, I'm sure you will get it to the point that you (your toughest critic) are pleased with the outcome. Great job.

Drove me nuts looking at those lines. So I opened it up and put a layer of dacron inside.

Have you thought about using some artists type medium or light weight canvas to make a trial and error one again, otherwise, it's going to get expensive to make trials in the vinyl? and the canvas is more giving in having seams ripped out and redone.

You've probably already checked this out with your hands: The oem style has only 2 folding, sewn-in seams plus the two seams for the small folding flaps that tuck inside body and a long piece of fabric in-between that supports 3 folds; The interior of the boot appears to have just 4 interlining semi-stiff padded sections for making the folds with two of the pieces meeting at the center to help with folding. As long as it folds, I don't think you're going to get away from unsewn folds not showing, though they will disappear with use on the car.

Dot. There are over 40 individual pieces involved in making this. Yes I have stiffeners all the pads and seams. I think it is just a case of the vinyl stretching and once it is in the sun it should relax. The top photo's I had used a tack adhesive to keep the parts in place and it stuck to the foam core and showed the lines. The second photo still shows the crease cause by that attempt. they will fade.

I think the difference is the fabric vs the vinyl. Vinyl is just not as forgiving as fabric is. Just keep working at it.

I am sure that is the problem. I could use a four way stretch vinyl but that would limit the colors to black, red, blue, green, yellow. I was/am hoping to figure it out. I am beginning to understand why the other aftermarket ones closed in the trunk.

Off the top of my head - needs refinement if even feasible - but if this were my project I think I would try to make a two piece boot... a stiff foldable "base" and a smooth roll-up vinyl "top". The base would use every other snap at the front and tuck under at the back just like the original boots. The top cover would use the remainder of the front snaps and would tuck under at the back and be held in place to the base with Velcro around the perimeter. Yes would take longer to install but would be as smooth and crease free as possible.

                      YMMV

Interesting concept. Like you stated it would take longer to install/remove. The stiff cover could have double snaps so the top piece would snap on top of it. No need to alternate snaps. I may give that version a try. Thanks for the input. I am never too old to learn from my mistakes or those of others.

I wouldn't call them mistakes just a learning curve.

Totally agree...what you're doing here, Peter, is fantastic - we appreciate all efforts in this contribution!

Perhaps you've considered it, but I think a canvas boot is more useful, easier to install, and store. And lots of colors, Sunbrella has many many colors.
