  • CTCI Bi-Laws Results

Looks like CTCI doesn't want us. Thanks to Ron McCloud for trying.
The vote to accept 2002 to 2005 Thunderbirds to The Classic Thunderbird Club International Failed.
1288 to accept the 2002 to 2005 Birds( 60.66% of the votes)
    835 Opposed ( 39.33% of the votes)
CTCI requires a 66.67% vote to approve.

Short-sightedness is hard to fix. With only 2100 active voting members worldwide and very little new blood coming in, it won't be long before CTCI is a shadow of its former self, if it is not already. I guess the 39% are worried about losing "control".

Oh well, we've got a much better thing going without dealing with the hiearchy of a club with officers, judges and a treasury to argue over.

As Jim said, kudos to Ron for bringing it to a vote.

Years ago I joned CTCI. Many CTCI members were very enthusiastic when the 2002 Thunderbird was introduced. I certainly felt that it was only a matter of time since it met their definition of a classic Thunderbird (2 door, 2 seat roadster). Many CTCI members own both a classic 55-57 model as well as the newer Thunderbird. Some have other Thunderbirds in the mix as well. Originally I wasn't going to renew my CTCI membership this year until I heard Ron made a request to put it to the membership for a vote. Got to say I'm a little disappointed as I think it is short sighted. Membership in CTCI has been in a decline for many years. It was at a point where operational costs of the club and putting out the Early Bird magazine exceeded their annual revenue. Fortunately, they've done some things to cut expenses to help get back in the black financially. This was actually a reasonable opportunity to expand the club and now they've missed that opportunity again.

Perhaps because they don't qualify for AACA participation for another eight years.

At an event at the glass house I overheard some say while walking through their section that those people down there, the TBN Group, are just pretenders. Their loss. I have tried over the years to get all T-Birds into one club. It will never happen.

Was it Groucho Marx that said he wouldn't want to join any club that would have him? That said, Merlot is perfectly happy without them.

As Ron McCloud said the Baby Birds weren't even teenagers when CTCI was started, so the "they aren't classics" argument doesn't hold up very well.

Part of the problem with the Thunderbird is that the car has been many different things throughout it's 50 year history. Two seat roadster, 4 person personal luxury car, 4 door sedan, large luxury car, etc. Many people appreciate certain model years that appeal to them. Unlike the Corvette, Mustang, or Camaro for example which has always been true to it's original roots (sports car, 2+2 pony car).

Thanks for the comments, I have been a CTCI member since 1966 member #1056. I was in on all the plans and instructions for the voting and I must say I heard lots of mean spirited comments from the other side. The Retro side was very quite and reserved with no threats and etc. I am sure the 39% side is shaking in their boots that it came so close to passing. The California and Texas groups got their way this time, but the writing is on the wall.

I do believe TBN needs to do more in the way of events. A few people have been carrying the load and there are lots of areas that have not been visited. Three places that come to mind are Boston, Charleston, and New Jersey/ New York.
