  • Vacation in California

Ten years ago I made a road trip w/Brian Metzger and missed 2 places in southern California. This week with my recently retired spouse we visited the Petersen Car Museum ( and their vault tour). Also while in Thousand Oaks toured the Reagan Presidential library. Both awesome places. Today we stopped in Santa Barbara to visit Milpas motors where Jim Dube got his 05 IG. They have many nice classic cars Ferraris , Shelbys, Rolls Royce Corniche rag tops etc. For the next 5 nights we're in Solvang for a small.family reunion.

I used to live four blocks from the Reagan Library. The area is actually in Simi Valley ? Wood Ranch.> When they opened the library they had I think four presidents there and I had Secret Service agents on the hill behind my house, which was actually my property. We were not allowed to leave until all the presidents had left the area.

A little scary when all these agents are armed with rifles surrounding you. It happened to me once at Wrigley Field when unannounced Pres. Reagan popped out of a Cubs dugout and waved to the crowd. There were agents on all the rooftops with weapons on the ready. All the streets were blockaded for a couple miles and prevented a friend from meeting us until after Reagan had departed.

Next time, I thought you lived in Sacremento. I did stay in Merced for 2 nights so I could take Barb to Yosemite.

While in Solvang, California I discovered a Motorcycle Museum that usually is only open on weekends. But when I walked over to it from my hotel, (Hotel Corque) there was a sign on the door that said if you want to see the museum call this number and if there are two of you, for $10 each we will open the museum by appointment for a self guided tour. That day I called and set up a time for the following morning at 11am and brought my Nephew Curt Ellison and my Grandson Angelo Ilardi. Angelo is 8, so he was free. Amazing collection of over 100 different bikes. One was similar to the one on Jay Leno's Garage. It is a 1922 Megola made in Germany and it has a 5 cylinder radial engine mounted directly to the front wheel. To start it you put it on a stand and spin the front wheel, when it starts you kick the stand off and go, no transmission , NO CLUTCH. It only goes, when you stop it, you have to start all over again because the engine only runs when you're moving!

What a great find, Cal. Wish we'd seen that place when we were there. Did they allow photos?

Roger (RQTBird) and I toured that Vintage Motorcycle Museum in Solvang in March 2018.
                        I thought it was GREAT!

If anyone is ever in Solvang, you should try to see it.

Yes, they encourage it. I took a video while there with my Galaxy 7 phone. Probably need a new one, my wife just got a 10 and it is very nice.

When walking through the museum, I was amazed that Jerry could name the Brand and Year of most of the motorcycles before reading the placard.

Cal, did you try the an Aebleskiver? Interesting to watch them make this Danish pastry.

No, I was enjoying all the different danish pastries at the Danish Mill Bakery near the Solvang Restaurant. I saw them making them, but didn't eat any. I made sure to have eggs and meat every day so that I wouldn't over indulge my sweet tooth. There is a fun video on making these little round jelly filled donuts on YouTube.
