  • Death Toll For Redlight Runners @ 10 Year High

In viewing the attached clip, I noted that one of the cars in one of the example incidents is a Platinum retro Bird. I hope it was no one on TBN. It also serves as a reminder of the intersection guidelines I conveyed as both a police officer and when teaching and training trainers in defensive driving for nearly 40 years:

    1) Always, always, look left, right, then left again when entering an intersection.
    2) Follow rule #1 no matter if you are stopped for a traffic signal or stop sign, or entering a signal controlled intersection on a stale green. If entering on a stale green, slow down if possible before entering the intersection.
    3) Follow rule #1 even if the street being entered is one way - signs don't control vehicle traffic flow. Just yesterday I was on a one way street when a car entered in the wrong direction in my path and the path of other vehicles.
    4) Be especially careful if you must enter an intersection against a red signal to allow an emergency vehicle to pass. And remember that motorists don't always hear, or pay attention to, emergency vehicle sirens.
    5) Generally, be alert to what is happening in the traffic flow in front of, behind and around your vehicle.

I see way too many red light runners at an intersection I have to pass perhaps 10 times a day. It' in construction phase. When the light turns green in my lane I look both ways first before I proceed.

Good friend of mine was killed instantly when he was t-boned by a car that ran a red while street racing. Good rules, Skip.

In Phoenix's paper just yesterday morning - Arizona ranked #1 for red-light runners (not saying we're "proud" of our ranking)

Red lights, stop signs, left-laners, tailgaters, merge idiots, mascara appliers, cellphonies - there's no end to the dangers on our roads these days. Ultra-defensive driving is essential for survival now. Be careful out there!

After the 2019 Pappasito's weekend, I am leery of driving at night on roads where there are deer crossings. I never saw it coming. Now when I see a sign, I'm vigilant and wary of any movement to the right or left of me. I guess after being hit by one of these animals it creates a new more defensive driving attitude. My night vision is not nearly as good as when I was younger and that is another concern. Roxy did get an excellent repair done by the Jones' Ford collision shop, and my new USAA insurance provider couldn't have been any better. I even got a 2018 Mustang Convertible to use for the two weeks while "Roxy" was being repaired.

I am baffled by the lack of political will to use red light cameras. It is a technology that pays for itself and makes a lot of money for the governmental jurisdiction that installs them.

Lots of false tickets here resulted in their removal.
