  • Tires: Age vs Mileage ?

The Michelin tires on my bird were installed in 6/2014 at 40,800 miles. I now have 48,800 miles on the car. The date on the tires is "3513". So they had been on the shelf for nine months when installed. The tires are now nearly nine years old and only have 8,000 miles on them. No cracks visible or other issues other than a hard ride that seems to be getting noisy as well. I had the tires rotated and balanced without any improvement. I am considering a new set of tires based on the age factor. What is your opinion on this?

Time for new tires. Not worth taking the chance.

Billy, I'd seriously be considering new tires in the very near future. Check out Ron's thread on tire options. No more miles than you are putting on, there are good options much less expensive than the Michelins.

Tires age quicker than they wear.
Seeing no cracks only means that where you are able to see there are no cracks. What you can't see is the age related interior breaks in the side wall.
I would be considering new tires. You don't need tires that will give you 40-50,000 miles of wear, not for your very low usage. Those types of tires will do what the tires you have are doing--- she before they are worn.
Lots of good options out there, investigate & none up before going to buy.

In GA many tire shops and dealers will not patch, plug, balance or rotate tires over six years old.

I agree with you guys. I think I will go with a set of Cooper tires. Thanks. Paul, can you send me the link to the thread on tire options?

To cut through a lot of chatter on that thread, these are the tires Ron swears by:

Yes, that's for 4, not one. Hard to argue with someone that has bought as many sets as Ron.

I may well get these next time as I also have low mileage. I just recommended the brand to a friend for her son’s car. She has a large family and a tight budget. I put a set of Nokians on my daughter’s car about a year ago. They are holding up well.

Can that be right, a speed rating WR? That's a 168 MPH radial tire!!

Agree with the tire conversation. I took a 7k mileage tire in with a nail and was told in AZ that it couldn't be repaired after 5 years. Not to change the subject but don't neglect the 3rd member with regard to noise, If you don't know when it was last checked or changed, it may be time.
