  • Don't overfill your gas tank !

On my way back from getting a new battery put in by my local Ford dealer, I stopped to fill up my gas tank ( I like a full tank at all times ) Long story short, I overfilled my tank by about three click-offs.
I think ya'all see whats coming next......CHECK ENGINE light came on as I drove off......DUH !!! Yep, Evap code. Went back to Ford Quicklane service, manager. He had a hell of a time finding the OBD II port
( where is it exactly ?) But he found it , took about two minutes and no more light ! No charge, but I gave him a generous tip nevertheless. I feel a little better about my dealer now......

I haven’t pumped my own gas since 2009.

If the service technician can’t find the OBD port, it’s time to get your service elsewhere.

Have you not bought gas outside of NJ in eleven years or when you travel does someone else pump it ?

The first option. Gas across the river in Pennsylvania is 20-30 cents more than New Jersey where it’s illegal to pump your own gas. The price difference is all state fuel tax. As you can see, I don’t travel a lot. That’s mostly because of my wife’s health.

Or it was just a matter of taking the gas cap off and retightening it. If it happens again, think about getting a new gas cap. The seals do wear out. However we've put a lot of miles on ours. Spouse always overfills ours, I dont but the blinkin' light has come on for me a couple of times and not him. If gas cap retightened doesn't fix it, a new gas cap might.

Switching to better gas and a new cap fixed my engine light on my '02 bird...

Its never a good idea to keep squeezing the gas pump handle past the auto-cutoff to get that extra 2 ounces of gas in the tank....causes problems on many cars.

Modern vehicles with faulty anti-siphon components (there are recalls on some cars due to this) or on older cars where the vented gas caps are unsophisticated and emit fuel vapors from sloshing, overfull tanks.

Sounds like you need to go to a different town.

Non-dealer garages do have the same OBD readers as the Ford dealers use. Or you can buy your own at a NAPA store or some other parts store of your choice. Just sayin - - - -

I had the "CHECK ENGINE" light come on, not the "CHECK GAS CAP" light.

Never heard of a "Check GAS CAP" message being programmed into our Birds but do know that an improperly tightened gas cap will drive a "Check Engine" message and light. What say yea you Bird experts?
