  • '02 TBird power steering pump actuator dilemma

My power steering pump went out and when my mechanic removed it he broke the original actuator. I've purchased a replacement actuator but the design is slightly different. The original part number is XW4Z-3783-CA which was discontinued several years ago. That same actuator is also on the '02 hydraulic fan motor. The actuator sent me is OEM part #F7AZ 3783 AA. Are there two different actuators used on the '02 TBird?

With this part discontinued and none available, it appears there will be many TBirds permanently parked in the future.

Have you asked the parts guy at your dealership?

Part numbers are the same. Both actuators should be identical.

Let us hope you are not replacing the pump because of an FEM module failure.

My 2002 was overheating. My mechanic has diagnosed the problem as the (Fan Clutch) Hydraulic Actuator XW4Z3783CA. As reported above, it is discontinued. Can anyone please help?

This is one of the fears I have with my '02 - the funky, one-year-only, hydraulic fan - come have converted to an electric fan which is prob what I would do there are many posts on doing this on the more popular retro T-Bird forums.

Having said that -- this may be what you want, not cheap and used but there you have it:

As with many commodity parts, this component may be made by one company to fit many cars; this Jeep version looks identical (but I can't conform it):

I had a friend with the exact same issue. No actuators were for sale on eBay at the time, so we removed
the actuator, and took the plunger out, then put actuator back.

Fan runs fast all the time, but does not bother him, and car no longer overheats.

I wish I would have insisted to have Ford garage give me the supposedly bad actuator. I was the FEM not the actuator.

The fan speed, probably, is controlled by the PCM (page 23-11 Wiring Manual)) PCM module and may use the same MOSFET transistor as is used in the FEM which controls the power steering actuator.

This hydraulic fan actuator can be controlled incrementally (as in the power steering) or full on-off. Same actuator is used.
Anyway, the PCM controls the cooling actuator via a relay or power transistor..
