  • What gearbox dö we have?

Hello allNow i need your help agen.
i picked Up My Bird today at the local workshop he was suposed to check and change gearboxoil because its shifting strange when its hot. But he said its no idea to put money in that bad gearbox. THE oil was burned and smelly. Told me that it needs to be sent away for restoration Costs about 2900$!!!!!!
THE list of expensive parts är Long now.....
So My question is does any one know what gearbox we have in our cars? Name or number?
and can i take a gearbox from another car (that i can find in Sweden) there are No retrobirds here to take parts from Maby a Mustang or something?
    /Fredrik

Fredrik, did the transmission shift when it was brought in for the service. These transmissions can run on old transmission fluid but if they are less than full, they will shift terrible after a oil change. They "learn" how to operate with even 1 and 1/2 liters less than they should have. The only way to fill them properly and check the level is from under the car using the plug. In a way it is similar to the way we used to check rear ends (differentials) back in the past. Why they eliminated dip sticks on these new cars is a mystery to me!

The way they change the fluid at Ford is they put in exactly what they remove. So if you were short a liter or more, they put back in the same WRONG amount. That is when they act really strange, shift problems, unable to go from one gear to the next etc.

Halo Frederik. You need the part #/ Build date. As an example my son needs transmission for his 2003 but the 2004 I have is not compatible, he needs a pre August 2003 Transmission

If I remember correctly, the build date is on a label when you open the driver’s door.

I thought the Jaguar "S" type in the same year model as our birds had the same engine and transmissions. Fredrik may have better luck finding a jaguar part or a jaguar mechanic for a second opinion.

Hi Gene No it shifted bad so thats why i left it att THE workshop, it shifts perfect when i start driving but after 5-10 minutes it starts to shift up and down just like it dont know what gear to select, and of i DO a kickdown it shifts down nicely but dont shift up i must release the gas litle and hit it agen to shift up

I beleve its THE selenoids in THE Gearbox im not sure My mechanicks are right when they say its THE torquebands (idont know THE right English Word) but they can get worn out and must changes. THE oil was smelly and burned but i think thats because its old

Had a similar problem with my 05, replaced the solenoid pack in the transmission and the problem was fixed.

                          Hi Billy
yes jaguar parts are much easier to find here.
So if iT comes to that i need to find a new gearbox i Will ask My Friends at jaguar IF they have one but i think it must be for a V8

The jaguar S type had a six speed Transmission where the Tbird has a five speed transmission. I doubt they are interchangeable..

Don't forget 2000 to 06 Lincoln LS. Probably equally rare where you are, but still a possibility.
