  • Convertible Top Cleaning “Formula”??

Much has been posted previously, but cannot find the “formula” mentioned on TBN in years past on how to clean the light colored convertible tops. It worked beautifully on our PCR top. A lady in our Florida group has the tan top on her 2005 with the typical dirt streaks on it. I seem to recall it was a combination of Ragtop Cleaner and diluted bleach. Can anyone help?

1 Cup Ragtopp Cleaner ]http://www.raggtopp.com , 1 Cup Bleach ( yes bleach– it won’t hurt the top) 1 Gallon of water.
Using a soft brush saturate the top with the solution. Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Let the top dry in the sun. Repeat this process if necessary.
When completely dry saturate the top with water repellent and let dry again in the sun.

With the Thunderbird New group, 303 seems to be highly recommended, Ragg Topp, too.

The best thing is to have a black top.

IMG_0218.PNG Sept 2009.JPG I gave up on my sand top and had a black top installed to replace it.

That formula Jim posted is what finally worked the best for my tan top. Still has some streaks, but much better.

Randy, I like the look of the black top better on your 'bird. Nice.

Gene, you're close. The best thing is to just drive in the sun with the top down!

But don't wear your covid mask while driving. If you do, no one can see your sh*t eating grin!

Right, John, put that baby down and cover it with the boot.

I have used the formula Jim Rugg posted. I didn't follow the 20 minute wait but my top wasn't that bad. I have kept my top up most of the time and I never put it down unless it is DRY. That is how mold starts growing and it looks black on a light colored top. Once it is cleaned, Raggtopp will keep it nice and when it is drying leave it in bright sunlight until totally dry.

I understand why the Bronze 2005 models look great with the Black top. But they too need to be kept clean and dark. If they are allowed to get greyish from dirt and mold they don't have the contrast they need. The best ( in my opinion) Sand package color is the Merlot. Torch red is what I have and as nice as it is, I think my Evening black with the Sand top looked better. My very first car was a 1954 Red Chrysler New Yorker Deluxe Convertible. It was almost fire engine red, with a smooth white convertible top, not Canvas. When I saw my 2004 TR with the sand top, it made me remember that car I bought in 1958.

For many years I've been using 303 after cleaning the top. Not every wash, but at least every couple of years. First heard of it here on TBN many years ago. I think there was a small sample in a goodie bag at one of the events. Keeps it looking nice and water repellant after 160,000+ miles.

Just make sure you're using a protectant that is for fabric tops, not vinyl, unless you've changed your softtop to a vinyl one, of course.

When I bought my car the salesman told me not to treat it with anything. Now salesmen can tell you anything but that’s what I did. Still looking great after 18 years.

Just soap and water is all that hits our softtops. Still looking good after all these years and many, many, many miles.
