The key-fob doesn't seem to be that expensive. The challenge is that even the ones Ford carries are unlikely to be the same shade of black as the one from the factory. https://www.keylessentryremotefob.co...d-thunderbird/
I programmed two fobs bought off Amazon (red to match the car color) and the programming took 5 minutes.
There is nothing to it, the original fobs are stored with other oringal items for the car.
Everything works lock/unlock panic alarm and trunk opening function.
i also programmed three extra fobs bought on Amazon. No problem at all. Keys are also easy.

I don't know what year bird you're looking at, Francesco, but I also seem to recall that the 2002 keys are a different size than the later years, so you have to take some care to get the correct size.

You can, BTW, get a plain key made without a transponder in it. It will not start the car, but will unlock the various car locks, including the keyed trunk release behind the seat; it can be handy to have with you in case you accidentally lock your keys in the trunk ;-)
